red dots?

Post by jmayk8 »

Since I have been on my asacol hd 800 mg I have noticed tiny red dots on my stomach and chest. Not many but probably around 4. This morning I woke up and had one under my right eye. I googled it and it looks like it's something called "cherry hemangiomas"? but not quite sure...has this happened to anyone? I'm not sure what to think...?

Any time I've had red dots like that, I've been allergic to the medication. You should call your doctor. Mine never got too excited about them, but I certainly was.

I really doubt that those are cherry hemangiomas. You're pretty young for something like that, and besides, they take a while to grow, they don't just suddenly appear, especially in groups.

I'm inclined to agree with Gloria - they're probably some form of rash/hives/acne/etc., caused by the Asacol.

My husband gets those, sometimes (home diagnosis - we also got our information from google). They seem to come and go and have never hurt him. In fact, I called him over just now and he has a few on his arms. They used to bother me, but his brother is a doctor and was totally unexcited about them ;)

I think if you have just 4, you should keep a watchful eye but not be super-alarmed. If you have a great increase suddenly, and/or have other symptoms, let your doctor know. It could be from the Asacol, or from your underlying condition, or something else. But if the Asacol is new to you, and this increases, you can crank up your concern.

AND - this is just my sense as a friendly person... not medical advice! If you have other symptoms that seem asacol-related, definitely call in the morning.

But I hope you're otherwise feeling OK...

Stay alert, but don't stress and sleep well, I hope!

p.s. - I now see that Tex is right about the age thing - they tend to start a little older and increase with age. But my hubby has had them for as long as I've known him, and they seem to come and go for him. Please keep us posted!

I would call the doctor and let him know. Anytime a new medication is started, you have to watch for signs of an allergic reaction.

thanks for the info... I have been on the asacol for 5+ weeks and seeing my doctor on Friday. I think I am supposed to stop it after 6 weeks so we'll see what he thinks. It has definitely helped me and I have been having 'normans' the whole time I have been on it. I'm curious to see what the doctor will recommend...

I don't know how old you are, but I developed a bunch of them on my abdomen and chest last year, and I'm 36. Initially I worried about them, then chalked it up to the aging process. I suppose some people get them earlier than others.
