Feeling better

Post by nancyl »

I wrote last Saturday when I was in my 4th week of a pretty bad flare. I was on Pepto Bismol and getting sicker with it. Mary Beth, Tex, Gloria, and others brought to my attention the seriousness of taking it when you have and intolerance to aspirin so I stopped. Even when I told my GI doc that I was stopping because of the previous bleeding ulcer, he was a bit upset with me and told me it wouldn't hurt me. I ignored him and didn't take it. I was sent to the ER to have blood work done, per the doctor, which turned out to be fine. It was a Basic Metabolic Panel. I came home pretty weak and weighing 102.5 lbs. I had been dairy free for quite a while, but was still eating yogurt up to about a week before this and stopped when Tex informed me that I probably shouldn't because of the casein in it. After that I really watched dairy in everything. I also went on a GF diet about two weeks prior. I think I was starving myself having a hard time with the diet. When I came home from the ER I went back on gluten, eating everything, but staying dairy free. Well, on Sunday things began to turn around and Norman made a visit. He has visited everyday this being the sixth and the most normal in 8 months. Isn't it funny how we count these wonderful days. I feel so much better and was actually so excited this morning because I felt good enough to hit the gym.

I also want to mention that on Saturday I started taking aloe vera juice, 1 ounce three times a day. I started going to an acupuncturist two weeks ago. I go twice a week. I will be seeing my new GI doctor next Friday. I'm just hoping that things continue to move forward in a positive way. I'm almost afraid of jinxing myself. I sent my samples off to Enterolab last Wednesday. Will I be able to figure out the results myself or should I post them to someone to help me figure them out?

I wanted to know if anyone else is not on a GF diet and doing OK? It seems like everyone is GF and I keep thinking that I should be too.

Hi Nancy it's great that you are finding your way through the mc maze. We all react differently and have a unique path that works for each of us.

Congratulations on solving this piece of the puzzle

Hi Nancy,

It's good to see that you're doing so much better. It's certainly possible that you might not be sensitive to gluten - not every one here is sensitive to it.

It will be interesting to see your test results. Dr. Fine sends an interpretation of the test results along with the results, so you should be able to understand them. However, if you will post your results, we would appreciate being able to add them to our database of results, for the benefit of other members.

The test results should tell you whether or not you are actually sensitive to gluten. Before you get the results, it's pointless to speculate whether you might be gluten-sensitive or not, because we tend to become somewhat addicted to our food sensitivities, and addictive substances usually have a way of convincing our brain that we "need" them, in order to persuade us to keep using them. Because of that, we tend to crave the foods to which we are sensitive. Your current state of remission, however, strongly suggests that your test result for gluten will be negative. Let's hope that's the way that it turns out.

In the meantime, enjoy your remission.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I'm just hoping to add a few pounds so I'll have some extra in case of another flare.

Oh, I bought some DF gelato at the health food store last week. The people who own this store are so careful about anything they sell. If the product ingredients, such as sweetners, etc., don't meet their standards then they don't sell it. Anyway, I didn't check the price until I got to the checkout. $9.00 for a pint. It is so expensive when you try to do anything healthy or preventive. I will eat it sparingly. I did taste it and it was pretty good.

We are fortunate to have a gelato shop in our little town. It has dairy but the sorbetto doesn't. YEA!

Nancy, I bet you can find sorbet cheaper than that. I also love the Edy's fruit bars. They have a different name in the western part of the country for some reason.
