Sara,

Actually, pathologists claim that the mast cells are visible without a special stain, and I have no doubt that is true. The problem is that unless someone requests that special stain, they never seem to bother to look for mast cell abnormalities.

The other problem is that apparently, many of us have mast cell degranulation issues, even though we do not have an abnormally-high number of mast cells. A certain number of mast cells are always present, but for some unknown reason, for some of us, some of those mast cells degranulate, (release histamine), inappropriately, (IOW, they shouldn't be degranulating, but they do so anyway), and certain foods seem to promote the degranulation of mast cells, and, of course, this also causes histamine problems. These issues, of course, currently tend to slip through the cracks, with conventional diagnostic technology.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

There is a method to the madness of testing... since many of us are covered by insurance.. the labs get paid handsomely for running the testing but the insurance companies don't want them to find anything "too expensive to fix" wrong with us... just my take on the whole thing:)

another point on this

be mindful that there are published articles that say the D that a MC patient has is a 'minor' issue....... or something to that effect.

I dont think there are many GI Specialists or GP's that full grasp how mentally, emotionally and physically exhausting a MC flare and ongoing chronic symptoms are.

gabes,
you are right almost no one really believes how it takes over your life and keeps you chained to the bathroom... they always think of flu or something that will just go away in a day or so.. even doctors stare and say.. it can't be that bad!
