Excellent website and blog on gluten intolerance

Post by Zizzle »

I used to read the Blog titled "The Gluten Doctors" published by a medical practice in Sunnyvale, California (you can be their patient remotely). They updated their site recently and have lots of great articles and information about gluten and its far-reaching effects.

The author is usually Dr. Vikki Petersen
Founder of HealthNOW Medical Center
Co-author of “The Gluten Effect”

This article points to dairy (a pro-inflammatory food) as a possible factor in the increased prevalence of celiac:

There is much concern about our ever increasing ingestion of dairy products. Research from around the world states that the vast majority of us lose our ability to digest milk products after the age of about 3 or 4 and the association between countries that consume higher quantities of dairy products and such diseases as autism, digestive complaints, allergies, heart disease and cancer, to name a few, are mounting. Is dairy one of the pro-inflammatory culprits that inflames the small intestine thereby setting the stage for gluten to create small intestinal damage? I can’t state the answer categorically but we do see a strong association between those who are gluten intolerant also having negative reactions to dairy products.
Hmmm...

Thanks for the link Zizzle. There are several good articles on this site. The link you pointed out is a good one and I thought this one was as well. She also mentions Enterolab towards the end of this one.

What’s the difference between celiac disease and gluten sensitivity?

In my opinion, very little. The problem we have encountered is that celiac disease is the only manifestation of gluten sensitivity that medicine has been able to diagnose. And not very well at that considering it takes the average celiac patient 10 years before they’re given the proper diagnosis.

So what is the problem? Is it that something considered “rare” is not often looked for?
Partially.

The fact that there’s no drug to treat it, so there’s no “easy” fix?
Partially.

The fact that the only treatment is a dietary change and no one really wants to “condemn” a patient to never eating wheat, rye or barley again?
Definitely!

Zizzle,

Yep, Dr. Peterson is definitely one of the good docs. She treats her patients according to their needs and in their best interest, not according to some obsolete medical tradition that should have been abandoned in the dark ages.

Thanks for the link.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
