Conversation with Dr. Fasano's nurse

Post by Zizzle »

I've played phone tag with Dr. Fasano's nurse, Maggie, for 2 months. I was simply trying to get my test results that never arrived by mail. She finally caught me and confirmed that my celiac antibodies were negative as expected (I'd been GF for almost 3 months), and I do have one celiac gene, HLA DQ2, which I already know from Enterolab (But they were unwilling to go by Dr. Fine's online tests ). The good news is Enetolab's testing was accurate.

I asked if futher testing was indicated, and she repeated what Dr. Fasano said during my appt - not unless I want to endure a gluten challenge of several weeks. I asked her what they do for patients with celiac and MC. She said they often do a small intestine biopsy at the same time as the scheduled colonoscopies, to make sure the celiac is under control. I asked if they prescribe meds for MC and she said they only do for cases where the symptoms are really making life difficult, or for patients who simply won't comply with an elimination diet. She gave an example of nursing home patients having D multiple times a day and how that's just not feasible for them or their caregivers, so they prescribe meds. She mentioned that it's important to get all the inflammation under control, so I asked if she felt the drugs were curative. She said no, they only deal with the symptoms. I explained that I was GF/DF/SF and I declined meds, and I was still not 100% but much better. She commended me for going the diet route and said that is always preferable when a patient is willing to stick with it.

She said they refer their celiac patients back to their GIs for medication management for MC.

I told her I knew Dr. Fasano was now doing research on gluten intolerance, not just celiac, and I said I would be willing to be a test subject. She immediately emailed my name to their clinical trials coordinator.

Zizzle,

This is all pretty cool news, most especially because it affirms that you're making wise choices and very much in charge of your health and healing. (I didn't love the part about playing phone tag with Dr. F's nurse for *two months* - but she sounds good to deal with, other than that, which is something.)

Nice news about the Enterolab testing, too.

You're brave to consider a clinical trial led by another scientist - other than yourself. I am most comfortable as my own guinea pig ;) I'm glad they're really looking at a broader range of gluten intolerance/sensitivity, beyond 'straight' celiac disease.

Hope you're feeling good in every way about this,

Sara
