Musings on a snowy morning

Post by Kari »

It's Saturday morning, and I'm sitting in our little condo in the rockies. Today is the final day Copper Mountain ski resort is open, and our plan is to go skiing. There is pretty much a white-out outside right now, as snow is falling heavily. However, there is a saying in the rockies "if you don't like the weather, wait a couple of minutes and it will change". I have witnessed this again and again, so I'm hopeful that it will clear up soon.

At the beginning of the ski season, I did not think I would ski for 2 reasons. I was feeling very fragile from the weight loss and the constant battle with MC. Secondly, I've been watching my grand-daughter (Naty) 4 days a week this school year (immensely rewarding:)). My SO, who is passionate about skiing (Denver born and raised), came up to ski by himself several times. Lately, I've been joining him on school winter vacation, and on week-ends, and my skills on the slopes are slowly improving :).

Anyhow, I've been feeling stronger lately, and my weight seems to have stabilized. It is as if my system is coming back into some kind of homeostasis. Even though Norman is still a ghost, I'm learning to accept that the process of healing will take time - it simply cannot be forced. I have good days and bad days, and am reconciled to living with that for the foreseeable future. So, I'm trying my best not to let MC stand in my way of challenging myself both physically and mentally.

I'm so very heartened and inspired by all the awesome and courageous people here, and cannot imagine where I would be if I hadn't found this "home". Even though I will not name names, as there are so many, and I don't want to accidentally leave someone out, I do want to recognize Tex, who is responsible for holding this home together for us. Love and admiration goes out to you Tex, you're a true hero in my mind!!!!!

Lots of love to all of you,
Kari

Hi Kari,
I was sitting here in Mississippi looking at the beautiful lush spring greenery and flowers that grace our landscape this time of the year. I am feeling a lot better lately and am so grateful for each good day. I, too am glad I found this great group of friends!

I am glad you are feeling better. Enjoy the slopes and, if not, enjoy the peace and beauty that follows the storm!

Morning Kari,

I appreciate the kind words, but in truth, it is you and everyone else who posts here, who are the true heroines and heroes of this site. All of you give it life, by graciously sharing kindness, knowledge, hope, love, and your own unique insight. Without all of you, it would be just another hollow space on the internet, with unfulfilled aspirations and ambitions, and no real reason for existence.

You are a vital part of the family that transforms this into a "home" - all I do is sweep the floor and replace burned-out light bulbs, now and then.

I hope the snowshower lets up soon, so that you can get out and enjoy those slopes, and the beautiful scenery.

Love,
Tex

Kari,
Sounds like you live in a beautiful spot. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us, it is so encouraging to think that we too can live a somewhat normal life. I think determination is the key, we just can't let MC control us even though it tries. I do hope you get out on the slopes today and enjoy yourselves. You are an inspiration to all of us. Just being able to attempt something like skiing is truly amazing. I love to ride my bicycle and was thinking the other day, "will I be able to ride this summer". Now I'm determined to get my strength built up so I can get out on the rail trail. I got on the scale this morning and have gone from 102 to 104 pounds. This is encouraging. I also feel much stronger and eating more.

Have fun on the slopes

Love
Nancy

What a lovely day, Kari! I'm so glad your weight, strength and mood are in a good place. That in itself all seems indicative of healing.

And Nancy, congratulations on your weight gain. Two pounds is a lot, for those hovering a little over 100. That will help you get out on those trails on your bike for sure, and your attitude even more so.

Celie, you're clearly having a very different spring moment from the ski slopes or New England - but I'm so glad you're also feeling better. Me, too.

My inspiration took a different turn today - a lot of houseplants had an emergency repotting. A friend's nursery had a big relocation last fall, with short notice... so there are more rescue plants here than usual. And, unexpectedly, we're hosting a friend's birthday party this evening, after a local restaurant required a very high per-person minimum. Not a bad way to spend a rainy day... I should just about have the potting soil out from under my fingernails by the time the birthday girl arrives.

Tex - I know you're right, that this is a team effort and a very special group. But I think of you more as our gracious host, though I deeply appreciate that you also do the 'custodial' work to make this clearing possible within which we all meet and learn and heal. You don't have to take the credit, but we'll be giving you some anyway (just so you know!). We are sharing some tough stuff, from our symptoms to the effort to figure out the latest research and treatments. In my experience, the tone and warmth and generosity of spirit, as well as the quality of thinking, inspiration, and kindness here, is extremely rare, and when a party this lovely is going especially well, it's only right to raise a glass to our host.

(And to anyone who's not feeling a little better today, I'm sending you thoughts for a better tomorrow.)

Love,

Sara

But Tex, how many who sweep the floor and replace burned out light bulbs have the world's best collection of MC knowledge in their brain?

Kari and Nancy,

I know how you both feel now that your weight has stabilized. I felt the same way this winter. It was almost like I had bottomed out and was finally climbing up and out of the hole I'd been in. I've gained back 10 lbs. now and I'm feeling and looking better. You will, too.

I, too, appreciate the wonderful family community on this site. There isn't anyone else who understands my ups and downs as much as everyone here does. Where else could we describe the scene in the commode? And have no one blink an eye, but instead nod their head.

Tex is the heart and soul of the board, along with a few other old-timers. I've been here long enough to see some drop out every few months, but Tex, Polly, Matthew, Barbara, Grannyh, Mary, Maggie, Shirley, Joanna and a few others (I hope I haven't missed anyone) still stick around on a regular basis to give advice and encouragement. It's amazing to me that those who have achieved remission still care enough to log on and help us fledglings out. I'm eternally grateful to all of you.

Gloria!

Ten pounds! I had no idea. That's terrific news!

Although, strictly speaking, you may not be an old-timer here, you have had a major impact yourself. I hereby concede my title of "poster child for multiple sensitivities" to you, to go along with the crown you have already earned for being the "Queen of Grains". And of course, you are a major contender for the award for the most determined/persistent elimination dieter!

Hugs,

Polly

Well, I think I'm up there, but I suspect that Pat could join both of us.

Kari,

Reading your post this morning was inspiring. I couldn't agree more that we have to mentally set the intention that MC will not get in the way of life. Good for you!!

Gloria,

Your 10 pounds weight gain is great news. You seem to have found what works for you. I know in time you will be able to eat more foods. Seems like this elimination diet thing is a lifelong process for those of us with multiple sensitivities.

Tex (any many others),

I share everyone's sentiments. A few years ago when I was so sick and didn't know where to turn I was eternally grateful for stumbling upon this forum - it was the only place that offered hope.

Love,

Mary Beth

Gloria - your bit of news made my morning!!!!! I was so worried about you earlier when you had pneumonia and lost the little weight you had gained, so am absolutely thrilled that you've gained 10 lbs. This qualifies for a celebration  .
