Has anyone read 'Love in the Time of Cholera' (Gabriel Garcia Marquez)?
Not sure what popped this into my head, but there's a character who at one point is terrified that the woman he adores will hear the 'bubbling' in his intestines, and at another point, I remember him suffering a painful internal 'foaming' of the bowels.
Although I read this book a long time ago, I am certain that this refers to something other than the cholera in the title... cholera plays a different role in the story.
Did that strike anyone else? I remember that even at the time (long before MC for me), I wondered whether the author had familiarity with intestinal distress in a very personal way.
Curious,
Sara

I doubt that I have ever read Love in the Time of Cholera, though since I am a voracious reader, I must confess that I have read books that I did not remember reading before until late in the book when something triggered my memory. I have read many books where a sudden trauma immediately affected someone's bowels, but I don't remember thinking that he or she had chronic tummy troubles.

Marliss, I'm sure there's a graduate study project in this for someone!
Love in the Time of Cholera was a delightful read - that passage I'm blaming on MC was quite memorable to me, though I read it before I had symptoms... I wonder what other literary characters have struggled with these situations!
I think we'll queue up the movie in Netflix.
Thanks for playing literary detective with me ;)

If you haven't watched Enchanted April, I highly recommend it. It's available on Netflix after being out of print (or whatever you say about movies) for a long time. There is no MC issue, but there is a pretty hilarious bathroom scene.
One of my favorite books/movies.
