Antibiotics Linked With Obesity

Post by tex »

Hi All,

Yep, researchers have found evidence that oral antibiotics cause a reduction in the mix of bacterial genes in our gut, predisposing us to gaining weight. IOW, lean people have a more diverse mix of gut bacteria than people who are overweight. How about that?

I wonder if it would help to eat a wider selection of contaminated food. I shudder to think what some of the future weight-loss books will promote as treatment schemes, once this news gets around.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hmm... wonder if my daily kombucha is helping to move the scale a little bit? I've wondered what the difference is. My kombucha culture is very healthy, even growing new strings in the jar after the mother is removed and the liquid is strained into a new container. It really grosses my kids out.

That sounds like a delightful secondary benefit.

I'm going to restart our kombucha project - thanks for the nudge. The mother is sleeping in the fridge...

Love,
Sara

p.s. Gosh, we just can't get our relationship with those germs figured out, huh? On the one hand, we wipe 'em out where they belong; on the other hand, doctors don't actually wash their hands quite as often as would be necessary. We develop these miraculous antibiotics, with the promise of saving lives, and then we turn them into enemies. It's obviously more complex than first imagined, and 'more complex' is the human brain's least favorite answer.
