Sara - my GI told me to avoid dairy and caffeine because they are "known" irritants to the digestive system. I do love coffee, so it's been a bit of a struggle. I hope once I get things calmed down a bit that I can reintroduce it into my diet. I was also a diet coke "addict". I know those aren't good for you, so it's probably a good thing that I gave those up.
Take care,
Denise

Denise, hello from New Hampshire and welcome to the group. I'm sorry you are dealing with MC and diabetes, but it sounds like you are well on your way to controlling this disease. I am glad that your blood sugar levels have been stable on the entocort. Certainly as time goes on, I would recommend some form of food intolerance testing such as MRT or Enterolab. With the knowledge these tests provide you should be able to manage the mc with little or no meds.
Best wishes and again welcome to the group.

IMHO dairy almost certainly is a no no, but from many here pure black coffee is ok (when you are not already flaring). Perhaps it is the sugar (or sweetener) and dairy many people have with coffee that gives it a bad name.my GI told me to avoid dairy and caffeine because they are "known" irritants to the digestive system.
Best wishes, ant

Hi Denise,
I am new to this site and just had to respond to your post. I was just diagnosed as having Celiac Disease in March. I was diagnosed with having MC about 5 years ago. My new doctor was the first after many who suggested we do an upper GI along with my normal colonscopy.
The biospy came back positive for Celiac and again for MC. He sent me for a blood test, and said even if it comes back negative for Celiac he was still going to diagnose me as having it. Well, the blood test came back negative. I have seen great improvements aftering going gluten free, but I still have a long way to go before I feel great. He also told me that MC seems to go hand-in-hand with Celiac. Good luck to you.

Lori - Welcome to the group! The people here are so knowledgeable and helpful. It's a great place to find out pretty much anything you need to know about MC and celiac. I just spoke with my GI last week about maybe having celiac. His response was that the blood test I had done is very reliable. From what I've been told here, it's not reliable at all. I am getting testing done at Enterolab, so we'll see who's right (I'm suspecting that it won't be my GI).
Take care,

Lori,
Welcome to the group. Your new doctor sounds ahead of the curve compared to what some members here have experienced - that's a great sign that you have a helper on your medical team.
I hope you continue to feel better, and I know you'll find the help you need here, whether it's finding recipes or commiserating about the hard days.
Denise, I hope you're feeling better already. Good for you, going right out there and getting done what you need to to get some answers.
Be well,
Sara

as per your doctors statement that coffee and dairy can be a trigger, there are lots of things that can be triggers for MC and it is very individual.
quite a few of us have common irritants like Gluten, Soy, Dairy, Yeast but not all of us.
quite a few of us can not tolerate salads but not all of us
I am still having coffee, these days as black coffee as dairy is an irritant to me.
It is worth spending the time, (and patience) to figure out what works for you and what is a trigger.
once you have most of it figured out, life with Mc is not as bad as when you are first diagnosed.
my motto regarding MC is that there is no right way or wrong way, there is your way...
take care

Dear Lori
Welcome from Hong Kong.
Your doctor sounds like he is on the ball. The symptoms of Celiac and MC seem to me to be very similar - just that one is tested in the small and the other in the large intestines.
Unless I am mistaken, both involve inflammation of the epithelial layer presenting an access of lymphocytes. Both involve D or C and, in many cases, both involve complications such as osteoporisis.
Hoping you find your way to remission for both Celiac and MC, best ant
