I can't even talk about it, I'm so mad. The insanity of it all speaks for itself.

Fascinating that there is no possibility in his mind that someone's symptoms might indeed be caused by lactose, but not in a way that's findable by his means of looking. Or perhaps by some other component in dairy. Or...

No wonder people suffer from 'psychological factors' when their caregivers dismiss their symptoms. I bet a whole lot of people with 'somatoform disorder' have something their practitioners don't believe in, or know how to look for (and not just 'non-celiac gluten intolerance' either).

Funny that they keep finding non-celiac gluten sensitivity, but don't believe in it. But they sure believe in the blame-the-patient Dx of 'somatoform disorder' - SHOW ME THAT on a biopsy.

I'm stopping right there, before I go further off on a rant.

Oh, you knew I wasn't done so fast - you see how it bugs them that they weren't as anxious as they expected them to be? Nor is there any suggestion that they might be anxious because feeling unwell is distressing.

Wonder how much the dairy producers kicked in for that little finding.

Stopping now, stopping, sshhh, not another word.

This is my favorite quote:
Patients can then focus on the real root of the problem and get back to eating dairy, she added.
Spoken like a cowboy! Sounds like "Get back to living!" since we can't do that without having dairy in our lives!! AARGH!!

Focusing on the root of the problem would then mean anti-depressants or anti-psychotics, washed down with a glass of milk!!!!!

Scarily, I think that's what they're suggesting. Amazing!

Doctors have really given up their right to that old joke, "Doc, it hurts when I do this." "Then stop doing that!"

Now *we* get to tell the joke, "Doc, it hurts when I do this." "Here's a prescription, plus another prescription for the side effects the first one causes... (oh, and if it doesn't help, it's because you're noncompliant, atypical, 'unusually susceptible' or - just not my favorite patient)."

Oh, and by the way, these patients seem to have been perfectly fine when "not doing that" - not drinking milk. Where does a GI get off making psychological assertions, btw?

I googled the fellow's CV, btw: he was a research fellow at the Mayo Clinic in '93. Just since we were picking on Mayo earlier in the day, I thought I'd hold that against him as well ;)

Here are a few titles for research reports that we will never see:

Study finds that some researchers may actually have psychological disorders.

Study finds that some researchers actually write up their reports with 100% objectivity.

or

An extensive search turns up a research report that appears to have been written without incorporating the preconceived notions of the authors.

Researchers publish the truth, despite the fact that it conflicts with the goals set by their financial or professional interests.

You know, I read this article title and then thought of something my mum said... which is possibly off topic slightly....

My Mum works in a nursery and a few children are lactose intolerant, and when the childrens parents have another child they automatically assume that the next child will also be intolerant, without testing this child too, and it actually leads to the younger sibling being quite ill through lack of nutrients (or something)

So, I do wonder if it is maybe just people being a bit overly anxious and the drs are 'milking' it?

Tex, if I can't work those into my 'snappy comebacks' project, they are absolutely going into some other collection of fine collectible quotes!

I suspect some of the people erroneously blaming lactose for their problems are actually gluten and or casein intolerant and pointing fingers in the easiest direction. My MIL blames all her GI issues on lactose even though she avoids it and the symptoms never improve. Hello, time for a new suspect!!
