Kelly - You May Find This To Be Timely Information

Post by tex »

Hi Kelly,

Have you seen the reports on a study comparing a conventional diabetes diet with the paleo diet, for controlling diabetes?
Overall, the Paleolithic diet brought improvements in a range of health measures and markers compared to the diabetes diet. Specifically:

* An additional 3 kg reduction in weight
* A reduction in triglyceride levels (high levels of triglyceride are linked with increased risk of cardiovascular disease)
* Reduced diastolic blood pressure (the lower of the two blood pressure readings)
* 4 cm reduction in waist circumference
* Lower levels of HbA1c (measure of blood sugar control over the preceding 3 months or so)
* Increased levels of HDL cholesterol (the form of cholesterol associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease)

Here is the complete report:

Since the paleo diet, (with possible minor changes), usually provides an effective base for a diet that works well for controlling MC, it might be a good place to start for developing a diet that works well for your daughter.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Tex,

I haven't seen this study so thanks for directing it my way. It's something that everyone should consider regardless of intolerances.

I'm going to keep this premise in mind as I continue to have an ongoing dialogue with my daughter.

Kelly,

I'm finding the many online paleo/primal recipe resources really useful. I'm guessing we'll see more and more convenience products along those lines... most likely they'd be tough to incorporate into your LEAPing, but they might be good for stocking a dorm fridge/freezer, so your busy college freshman can avoid being in a situation where she's hungry and there's nothing safe in sight. It's possible that she'll meet kids who are into paleo eating because of health or athletic interests. I personally think paleo/primal is kind of cool, but please don't tell her that - I am waaaay too gray-haired for that to make the right sort of impression ;)

We had a 2nd variety of paleo breakfast waffles today - I should make some ahead & freeze them, and I could have some convenience food myself.

Hope you're feeling strong yourself these days!

Love,
Sara
