It's Baaack

The watery D has returned. So, now I have to decide whether I want to try a lower dose of the Entocort to see if I still have the side effects or to try Lialda.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!
Denise

Oh, Denise, I'm sorry to hear it.

I can see why you want to avoid the risk of Entocort, particularly as you've already had side effects. Is it possible some food you thought you'd rule out sneaked past the defenses? (That happened to me recently - and I am hard-core crazy on the defenses.) In that case, you might be able to recover in a few days with your favorite anti-D med.

Hope you get good thoughts on Lialda from someone who's been there. I took Asacol when first diagnosed (a loong time ago), and it didn't seem to me to help at the time. But I had a very lucky break from digestive symptoms for quite a long time. (I strongly suspect I was accumulating damage in other areas, since I didn't know about the diet connection.) Asacol has made some members here feel really dreadful - it's a cousin of Lialda as far as the active ingredient goes, and it does contain lactose as a binder in the pills (I believe Lialda does not). The main ingredient is a salicylate, so if you'd have trouble with Pepto Bismol or aspirin or - other things in that class, just keep that in mind.

Hope you're doing well other than this backslide.

Love,
Sara

Hi Denise,

IMO, Lialda is worth a try. It's a much better 5-ASA med than Asacol. It usually doesn't work as fast as Entocort, but I suspect it's your next best option, since Entocort is a problem. I'm just basing this opinion on what I read here and other places, not on personal experience, because I've never taken it, (nor anything else, to treat MC, for that matter).

Oh, Denise, I'm sorry to read that the D has returned. I think I'd give other medications a try before I'd try a reduced dosage of Entocort.

Morning Denise,

I hope this too may pass and so sorry about the Entocort side effects. Definitely know how they can impact a person.

Love, Maggie

Good Morning Denise,

So sorry to hear the D has returned. I'm not much help when it comes to meds since I have had problems with most of them (although haven't tried Lialda).

How's your diet? Are you keeping a food journal where you could possibly see a culprit food?

Sara mentioned a possible OTC anti-diarrheal med. Maybe that is worth a try if you haven't already.

I hope it is short-lived and you find a solution soon. Keep us posted.

Hugs,
Kelly

Thank you all for your love and support! I haven't been vigilant about my diet. I've avoided the obvious sources of gluten, but we've been eating out a lot lately and I've probably been inadvertently glutened. I love eating salads, so I've been eating those just about every day. I was excited that they weren't causing D.

I have another question. My baby boy's birthday is today...he's 11, already!! I had children 13 years apart. My daughter started college the same year my son started kindergarten (a very hard year!) and now my daughter is getting married in October and my baby will be starting middle school! Where does the time go? Anyway, back to the question. My son's favorite restaurant is this Japanese place where they cook your food in front of you. I know I can get white rice instead of fried, but what about the stuff they season the meat and veggies with? I know I need to avoid soy sauce. They have these ketchup type bottles that they use for seasoning. They cooks always say "Dr. Pepper or Coke" when they are using them. It's supposed to be a joke. Does anyone know what's really in those bottles? Are there any other ingredients besides soy sauce that I need to ask about?

Thanks again!

Hugs,
Denise

Denise,
You are right-- all that eating out and salads must be causing the D. I know it would for me. Salad is very irritating and full of fiber. Right now a watermelon binge is causing my D. I'm totally addicted to watermelon, can't resist it! Dr. Pepper and Coke sounds like soy sauce to me. Most asian brown sauces will contain wheat - terriyaki, hoison, oyster, many others. If you must eat at this kind of place, bring your own GF soy sauce to season your food and have them prepare yours with no seasonings, except maybe garlic and ginger.

Teppankyi was my favourite 'eating out place'. Now with my Yeast Free and Soy Free eating plan eating at Japanese is not posssible.

some hidden ingredients that may cause issue;

- the rice may have stock in it to give it flavour - the stock used by restaurants is full of preservatives, additives, yeast, soy etc
- quite a few of the oils / condiments they use for flavour for the cooking are soy based and some of these can be wheat/gluten based as well
- you might be able to ask them to cook your portion in a small amount of butter (if you are ok with Dairy) that may be the safest option

there are Japanese restaurants here in Australia (that do teppankyi) that are gluten free, none of the things they use are wheat based, i ate at one of these and the meal was great, this was before releasing that soy was on my NO list.

hope this helps

Denise,
I am so sorry that the big "D" is back. I have been on Entocort for a month and had been doing great on it until yesterday. I too went out to eat and had french fries. Not a good thing to do. Hopefully, I will be OK tomorrow. I cannot eat salads either and I love them. So I'm back to the basic chicken, potatoes, well cooked veggies and hoping this will pass. I have to say they were wonderful at the restaurant and told me how everything was cooked and what was on it. The server reported me to the manager who also came over to make sure everything was OK. So, it was not them, it was my stupidity. I will be eating out over the next few days too. We are visiting my son who manages a restaurant, so while there we eat most meals out at his place.

Good luck to you and I hope this passes quickly.

Denise,

I just ate at a restaurant tonight, so eating out is on my mind. I brought my own rice and cauliflower. I ordered plain lamb and pork chops. I asked them to cook them on aluminium foil, but the waitress offered to broil them in their own pan. I said that would be OK. They didn't put any sauce or seasoning on the meat.

It's too soon to tell if it will be OK, especially since I've already had a bad day, but I'm optimistic. I've found that if I bring my own starch and vegetable and just order plain meat, I'll have better success. If I could eat potatoes, I would order one for my starch.

Good luck tonight!

Gloria

Denise,

It's really hard for me to give advice since I haven't licked this but I would think you need to talk to the chef before hand and let them know your intolerances. The nicer restaurants usually will work with you and try their best to keep you happy.
