Sesmark Rice Thins now have soy tocopherol

I went to the store to purchase my favorite rice crackers, Sesmark Rice Thins. I looked at the list of ingredients and was astonished to see soy tocopherol listed as one of the ingredients.

I checked my package at home, and it doesn't list the ingredient. Now I'm wondering if the crackers I have at home do have the soy tocopherol, but an earlier label. That would certainly explain my ups and downs.

Let the buyer beware.

I've looked at other rice crackers, and they all have an ingredient which I can't handle. It looks like I'll be eating rice cakes with my nut butter from now on - or making my own crackers.

Hi Gloria,

I've been eating Edward & Sons Rice Snaps for a long time - they are really crunchy, which I like, and I have absolutely no adverse reaction to them. My favorite flavor is Unsalted Sesame; it only has two ingredients: Brown Rice and Sesame Seeds. Have you ever tried them?

Thanks for the suggestion.

I don't think I can eat sesame. I used to put Tahini, a sesame paste, in my mock mayonnaise, but had to remove it because I reacted to it. But I also removed olive oil from the mayonnaise, so maybe I need to revisit it.

I have some rice-sesame crackers from Whole foods that I used to eat all the time. I should test them in the future.

Thanks for the update (and thanks, Kari for the food suggestion)... are you guys daring me to learn how to make rice crackers? 'Cuz you know I'll take that dare, though maybe not in the middle of my struggle to figure out "egg-free paleo" this week.

My almond-pulp crackers have improved, with olive oil and baking powder (am I remembering correctly that corn is OK for you? I'm not sure whether it is for me, but this is currently my only corn intake, and I'm just promising myself to test it more specifically another time).

I wouldn't be surprised to learn they added the soy tocopherols between batches - and I wouldn't be surprised that the earlier label was inaccurate.

Love and health, and I hope sesame works in your test. It seems like the kind of ingredient that could be difficult as whole seeds, but OK as a small, ground-up or oil addition?

I must admit that your homemade crackers did cross my mind... Let's not call it a dare, let's call it a temptation. :smile:

Yes, not being able to eat eggs makes a paleo diet especially challenging. That, plus not being able to eat fruit are the reasons why I never attempted it.

Edward & Sons makes a number of different versions of Rice Snaps, with varying ingredients. The ingredient list for their Unsalted Plain Rice Snaps, for example, (which, similar to the Sesame Seed version, contains only 2 ingredients), is:
Ingredients: Organic Brown Rice Flour, Organic White Rice Flour.

Sara, have you seen this recipe from Elana's Pantry?

Vegan Herb Crackers
2 cups blanched almond flour
¾ teaspoon celtic sea salt
2 tablespoons Herbes de Provence
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 tablespoons water

In a large bowl, combine almond flour, salt and and Herbes de Provence
In a medium bowl, whisk together olive oil and water
Stir wet ingredients into almond flour mixture until thoroughly combined
Roll the dough into a ball and press between 2 sheets of parchment paper to ⅛ inch thickness
Remove top piece of parchment paper
Transfer the bottom piece with rolled out dough onto baking sheet
Cut dough into 2-inch squares with a knife or pizza cutter
Bake at 350° for 9-11 minutes, until lightly golden
Let crackers cool on baking sheet for 20 minutes, then serve

I think I used one of the other recipes from our friend Elana - and I did them in the dehydrator instead of the oven. Maybe I'll do my next batch in the oven, and adhere a little more to her recipe. (I'm so good at 'adhering' to diet, no idea why I'm so recalcitrant about following a recipe!)

Thank you again for the suggestions.

I will look for the Edwards & Sons rice crackers first. I really don't want to start making my own crackers, but if I have to, the recipe above looks doable.

When I was beginning the LEAP diet, I made tortillas out of various grains/seed flours and broke them apart for crackers. They were pretty plain, but rice crackers are, too.

Yesterday I had two perfect Normans. This morning - D. Sigh. I suspect remission will only come with the help of Imodium AD. Trouble is - I can't buy it in any stores. What is going on? I have a package of 24, and then I'm done. I'm going to scour the Internet today. What's available is almost as expensive as the generic Entocort overseas.

As Tex said, there are many flavors of the Edward & Sons rice snaps. The plain rice ones are also good - I used to eat them until I figured out that I was OK with the sesame ones, which I have come to prefer.
