Appointment With My Internal Med. Dr. Today
Hi, all my potty peeps! I hope everyone is having a good day. It's going to be a hot one here....99 today and 100 tomorrow. Tex, how about you? I heard it was 110 in west Texas last week. I'm not sure exactly where you are in Texas, but I bet it's pretty darn hot there too.
Anyway, back to the post. I have an appointment with my internal med dr. this afternoon. I haven't seen him since I was diagnosed with CC. I'm going to bring my Enterolab results with me to see what he thinks. He has always been a forward thinker and has listened to me when I've found things on the Internet. He let me try a couple of different meds for my fibromyalgia that I had read about. Neither worked for me, but I really like that he doesn't look at me like I'm crazy when I tell him about things I've researched. It's really hard to find someone like that. It will be interesting to see what he has to say about the tests.
Have a great day!
Hugs,

Sounds like your doctor's a keeper - especially with CC, since it's uncommon enough that some docs don't have a lot of experience, it's wonderful that he trusts you enough to listen to your thinking. Oh, and he listens!
I hope your fibromyalgia responds to dietary changes, too. That would be a nice bonus!

Denise,
I live about halfway between Dallas and San Antonio, and fortunately, the temperatures here aren't predicted to be any worse than where you're located, for the next few days. They were predicting 100 today, but now they've backed off a degree or two. It's gonna be a long, hot summer, though, if the drought continues.
I agree with you about the bedside manner of doctors. I'd much rather have a doctor who admits that he doesn't know much about a particular problem, (such as MC), but is willing to listen and learn, than one who pretends to be an expert, and ignores everything I say.
Good luck with the appointment.
Hugs,
Tex

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
My appointment was great. I gave him my test results and he was very interested in hearing what I had to say. He said he could draw another serum test for celiac, but thought it really wouldn't matter because the Enterolab report showed that I definitely have it. He agrees that I should definitely go gluten free and try to take a lower dose of the Entocort for a while. He also wondered if the other sensitivities (soy, dairy and eggs) are being caused by the inflammation from the gluten. I thought that was interesting since I've wondered that myself. The theory that he gave was that the inflammation causes food to not be absorbed, thereby giving the immune system in the gut a lot more to react to. Does that make sense to anyone else?

Wow! A GI specialist that accepts the Enterolab test results at face value! You are one lucky lady to find a doctor so up to date. Good for him, and good for you.
It's not impossible that what he says about the other food sensitivities might be true in some cases. Most of us find that a positive result means that we are sensitive to that food forever, but genes sometimes change, and miracles do happen. Contrary to what most doctors believe, it takes several years for the intestines to completely heal from either celiac disease or MC, so please don't be in a hurry to experiment with those other food sensitivities. Kids heal in just a year or so, but adults take much longer, and some of us never completely return to our original histology. Give your gut plenty of time to heal first, and then even if you're still sensitive to them, the reaction will not be nearly so severe.
I'm just blown away that he would accept the Enterolab diagnosis of celiac disease. Kudos to him! Not many GI docs are that open-minded and up to date.

Hugs,
Tex

WOW, I'm loving your doctor, too!
Tex makes a good point - some folks (including Tex himself, our gracious host) have added foods back, but I believe that's less common with 'lab-tested' intolerances than with those that were figured out by personal observation - I might be mistaken here. Have you started a diary of everything you eat, and symptoms? I'm having a hard time re-starting that, now that I'm feeling better, but it really helps a lot. When I was first sick, everything I ate seemed to cause everything bad - now I think it would really make clear what I need to focus on. (note to self...)
I think you're off to such a good start with this doctor, and your growing understanding. Hopefully with your own efforts and his support, you'll be getting yourself back on track. You have some experience managing Type 1, so you might be ahead of the curve in getting this down to a science. And a little bit of an art. It's great that you'll have support from this MD going forward. Hope you're feeling optimistic!

Tex - He's an internal medicine dr., not a GI. I'm going to show the test results to my GI next time I see him. I don't think he'll be as accepting. He already told me food has nothing to do with MC and that if I had celiac the blood test would have shown it. It should be interesting to see his reaction to the test results.
Sara - I have started my food journal. Today is the first day that I've been gluten, soy, dairy and egg free and I've only had D one time. I really don't think it would work that fast, but it sure would be nice if it did!

Well, you're right - that probably explains why he was so accepting.
I'm sure you're right about your GI doc - he's probably going to see that report in an entirely different light.
I hope your good response to the diet continues. Maybe you'll set a record for a quick recovery, here.
Hugs,
Tex
