pepto bismul question

Post by harma »

this morning I've tried to buy pepto bismol. And they came up with colloidal bismuth subcitrate. Is this the same, only a different name or is this something else? I try to look it up and had the idea this stuff is used for stomach acid reflux or other stomach problems. Well my stomach is fine, it is my bowel :-((

Haven't bought it yet.

After a day of fish and rice, this morning not a norman or D, no BM at all. I went to the gym this morning also, and seem to have the energy for a work out, compared to two days ago, this is a positive development I would say.

I wish I knew the answer to your question but I don't. I'm sure someone will along with more info.

I am so sorry you are in a flare, Harma, and I hope it comes under control soon.

Hi Harma, I'm sorry to hear of this flare up that has been bugging you for a while. I'm glad that it sounds like it is settling down.

Peptones Bismol contains Bismuth Subsalicylate, I'm not sure what the difference is with the brand you spotted there but it does sound somewhat different as far as the ingredients go. The description for it is probably meant to be the same as in most meds of this type affect the whole GI tract.

Hopefully Tex and his encyclopedic knowledge will be able to weigh in on this one.

My first instinct is that it contains the bismuth in the colloidal form but the Subsalicylate component has been substituted. Don't let the word colloidal bother you as it really only means small particles. Something like talcum powder would also be considered colloidal in nature. The standard US Peptones Bismol would also be considered colloidal.

Hope you continue to improve Harma

Hi Harma

I tried a little Google search and it seems to have an effect on the Duodenum (the first section of the small intestine). But that is not, of course, the colon. Hope you can get some more info soon.

Best, ant

Hi Harma,

As you suspect, colloidal bismuth subcitrate has been used to treat ulcers/H. pylori infections, and proximal duodenum issues. As Joe mentioned, bismuth subsalicylate has a better record for treating diarrhea, (IOW, lower GI tract issues). Here's the first page of an article that compares the two products. As the article says, the modes of action of the two compounds are compared in "Table 2", but unfortunately Table 2, (and the rest of the article), is only available to people who either have a subscription, or are willing/able to pay for viewing the article.

See if they can order bismuth subsalicylate.

today I will go back the pharmacy (one the other amman features, believe me there is no descent supermarket around, again, only small ones, with only limited range of food, but pharmacies, in a radius of 1 km, I would say somewhere between 10 and 20)and ask for the bismuth sub salicylate. Hopefully they can have it or can order it.

Last days, well it is not going that bad, not a Normam yesterday morning, but a solid little pieces. But also the feeling of C. And this morning everything came out, in mixture of solid pieces and D. But it looks a bit better.

Going for a swim, part of my regime to beat the CC, daily exercise.

pepto bismul not available in Jordan. I also called my GI in NL today, well he wasn't really helpful. This board is more informative. But I am going to try entocort two a day, not two at the same time, one in morning and one in afternoon and hopefully that will help in a couple of days. And of course with diet (chicken, rice, tea)

I guess that means that some people get ulcers in Jordan, but no one gets diarrhea.

Good luck with the new dosage of Entocort.
