Just Spoke with Joe!

Post by Polly »

Hi All,

I just had a chat with Joe, and it was so good to hear his voice!!! He is doing better, but has certainly had an extremely rough time the past few days. It was fortunate that he went to the hospital in the middle of the night when he did. What a shock it must have been to have all of those serious complications when the dose of Imuran he had been taking seemed to be effective. His white count has come down, so the antibiotics are working. His voice is still hoarse from the endotracheal tube used for anesthesia. Tomorrow they will let him eat soft foods. I asked him if the hospital had any steamed crabs on the menu, but he didn't think so. Tee Hee. He IS hungry, which is always a good sign! The current plan is for him to be discharged on Tues. His attitude is great, as usual.

We talked about how these rotten IBDs blindside us when we least expect it. But Joe's attitdue is super - "it is what it is". He truly is (and has been) such an inspiration to all of us. I know he always enjoys hearing from our family here.

Love,

Polly

Polly,

Thanks for sharing . I can remember how helpful and comforting your calls were, when I was in the hospital. It's an awesome experience to receive a call from a doctor who actually cares about you, even though you're not her patient. I'm sure your call boosted his morale significantly. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that he asked the hospital food service about steamed crabs, after you brought it up. LOL.

And thanks for checking on Joe.

Love,
Tex

OK.

I have been off line for a while. What happened to Joe? Concerned.

Rich,

I was going to respond, but I see you found the other thread. He may be going home today, but we haven't heard any update on that today.

Thanks Tex,

It's amazing how "left behind" one can become by staying off the site just a couple weeks.

Looks like everyone is doing relatively well, and Joe is improving thankfully.

As Dave Ramsey says, I am doing better than I deserve. Have some of my old pelvic pain creeping back lately. It is like an interstitial cystitis. Really sucks because I feel i have to pee all the time. But I know this will pass as I do my pelvic floor stretches. If it is not one thing, it is another.

Good to hear from all of you.

Rich, I think about that, as I plan our vacation next week - being in touch here is a big part of my day. In a way, it's great news when we can take our attention off of what MC has brought us, and spend time on other things - not only the absolute musts of work and family obligations, but - watching a movie, researching something of idle interest... wasting time. Hope that was at least part of your mix.

Truly, if it's not one thing, it's another. I'm sorry you're having pain sneak back up on you. Interesting thought, about the interstitial cystitis - that has come up with at least one or two new members recently. And it does seem as though we have had a flurry of newly diagnosed folks join us... could that be seasonal??

I wonder if my low-back/sciatica/old-dancer injuries might be connected to the pelvic floor. I'm grateful to you for even reminding me that that's a part of my body. For sure, after an iffy food... and maybe even after *fearing* about an iffy food... I feel pain that's not usually there. I'm coming to recognize that MC has been affecting my life for longer, and in more ways, than the alarming D that got my attention. I am, strangely, more optimistic about my lifelong health than I was before I knew I had a chronic, autoimmune, inflammatory condition. So - if you need some optimism in your toolkit this week, please take a chunk of mine. I know that if I have a darker day ahead, I'll be able to borrow a cup of optimism from someone here ;)

Wishing you well,

Sara
