Really, IMO, they're both variations of the same disease, namely gluten sensitivity, but I doubt that the medical profession will ever concede that. They both present as inflammation of the epithelia of the intestine, and in both cases, sensitivity to the exact same peptides found in certain grains, are the primary cause of the disease. T-cells are the cause of the inflammation in both diseases. The only difference is that celiac disease primarily affects the small intestine, and MC affects both the small intestine and the colon, (and sometimes the stomach, though "officially", it can only affect the colon, by definition). Furthermore, the same treatment resolves the symptoms in both diseases. If it quacks like a duck . . .Ant wrote:From all this it is sooooo obvious that MC and Celiac are related illnesses.
In the case of MC, it has been claimed, (by none other than Dr. Fine, himself), that gluten sensitivity does not initially cause the disease, but that gluten sensitivity can trigger it, once the genes are activated. I question the validity of that claim, because the same thing happens with celiac disease. By that standard, gluten sensitivity does not cause celiac disease, either, because the disease cannot develop until the genes are triggered.
