Actually, pathologists claim that the mast cells are visible without a special stain, and I have no doubt that is true. The problem is that unless someone requests that special stain, they never seem to bother to look for mast cell abnormalities.
The other problem is that apparently, many of us have mast cell degranulation issues, even though we do not have an abnormally-high number of mast cells. A certain number of mast cells are always present, but for some unknown reason, for some of us, some of those mast cells degranulate, (release histamine), inappropriately, (IOW, they shouldn't be degranulating, but they do so anyway), and certain foods seem to promote the degranulation of mast cells, and, of course, this also causes histamine problems. These issues, of course, currently tend to slip through the cracks, with conventional diagnostic technology.
