HI Gloria and so sorry you have been hit with this when things were starting to go a bit better for you.

After 3 rounds of heavy antibiotics since October and the rabies bit, I have stuck with a probiotic that worked well for me in staving off the D. Sorry I cannot remember the name but it was really nothing so special just from the local druggist.

Keep on the mend.

Love, Maggie

I've been thinking my skin is more sensitive lately - more easily scratched, and the scratches seem more easily irritated (by lotions, etc.)... maybe this is a reminder I need to be more cautious (and wear my gardening gloves more consistently).

Hope you're feeling good today, Gloria...

Gloria,
I hope you get the cellulitis cleared up with a minimum of other problems.

What a coincidence. I started the very same antibiotic yesterday for an infected finger, something called paronchyia, which incidentally first flared when the LC started, and I thought was related to it all this time It would flare up, and settle down about every two weeks, right in tune with the LC symptoms. Weird.

Anyhow, the prescriber was the rheumatologist to whom I went yesterday for an autoimmune workup, who said no, that's an infection, and who, of course, knew about the LC. I got home and checked the printout for side effects; first one listed: "may cause diarrhea." I am giving it a try as antibiotics, on the rare occasions I have taken them, have made me constipated, which is why it didn't occur to me to ask about D as a side effect. Part of the learning curve of LC, I guess.

Gloria,

I looked up the dairy free Culturelle and it has inulin in it. Inulin is a fructan. I don't know if you are avoiding fructans as well as fructose. It is recommended that you do if you do not see results just eliminating fructose. Just FYI.

Suze,

I believe that you've discovered another previously unrecognized possible side effect of MC. I'm not convinced that your rheumatologist is correct when he suggests that it's not connected with MC. True, it is caused by an infection, (and sometimes by fungi), but that does not disqualify it from being linked with MC. SIBO, C. diff, and various other infections are not only associated with MC, but can actually cause it. That observation pretty well blows his argument out of the water. A paronychia is a superficial infection of the epithelium, (of the skin), lateral to the nail plate. While the epithelia of the skin does not contain the mucosal layers found in the epithelia of the intestines, in most other respects, it is very similar to the epithelia of the intestines, and it even shares many/most immune system features.

The connection never dawned on me before, but I had that issue quite often when I was reacting, (and prior to that). However, I don't recall having a single case of it since I've been in remission. That may be circumstantial evidence, but it's pretty strong circumstantial evidence, IMO. Many other skin issues are linked with MC, why wouldn't paronychia be similarly linked?

Thanks for bringing that to our attention.

Hi all,

I just wrote in another thread that I seem to be back on track again. I don't know if it's the probiotic, or if the D was caused by eating a couple of tablespoons of rice from DH's Chinese dinner. I'll continue with the probiotic and hope I can stay on track.

Tex,

Interesting discussion about the skin infection connection to MC. I've never had this type of reaction before - it was pretty quick and a little scary. I can't help but think about my mouth sores connection to MC. I am seeing them less and less as time goes on, probably once every couple of weeks compared to nearly every day before. They are probably more closely connected to a mast cell problem, though.

Gloria,

Sorry to jump in late but I'm glad to hear you are feeling better and back on track. Hopefully the cellulitis is clearing up quickly for you.

My fingers and toes are crossed that you'll reach your 8 week mark of being Entocort free soon. Hopefully the Imodium is all that will be necessary for the little bumps in the road.

It really is unsettling how many side issues that seem to be related to MC there are. If it wasn't for all the wise experience of the members here, I would have never connected the dots.

I hope you are feeling much better today.

Hugs,

Kelly

just catching up on the post - it is good to hear that you are feeling better.

It seems that MC is a crazy dance of 2 steps forward and 1 step back... this thread is a reminder of how vulnerable our bodies can be, not just the digestion.

Fingers and Toes crossed that you continue to improve.

i have had many periods of my life where i bruised easily, more so in the last 6-12 months if i get a bad knock and bruise, the skin stays discloured in the spot for months, on my last blood test check i asked if my Vit K could be tested, the doctor requested it, albeit there was mass confusion at the blood collection point as they did not have instructions on the protocol for collecting a sample for Vit K testing.

the lymphatic drainage massages should have helped but i still have marks from bumps that happened 6 months ago.

That's interesting, Gabes - bruising easily has been an on-and-off thing for me over the years, too. If I were to add one supplement, it would probably be Vit.K... but I'm not adding anything till I get my training wheels off this diet bicycle ;) I'm still a little too wobbly, which might mean I'm eating something I need to eliminate, or it might just be that it takes some time to restabilize in general, and specifically from my last backslide. I am guessing both could be the case.

Too bad they messed up your testing. That happened to my late mother repeatedly, and always with the most important test, they'd put it in the wrong sort of test tube. Drove me wild.
