I never would have guessed!

Post by Matthew »

Hey all!

I was watching the news while making dinner tonight and was almost knocked over.

I have had a fabulous Dentist for years that has helped me through some minor and major problems and i have sent several friends to him who have always called to thank me with glowing reports in that he cured long time problems. Fantastic staff that always made me feel good.

He always explained everything and though the hygienist would drive me crazy in how thorough she was I was thankful for it

He was arrested today on 416 counts of obtaining controlled substances by fraud. Oxycodone, hydrocodone, Lorazepan and Zolpidem. Each count four years in prison and up to 250,000 fine.

I have talked to him about anything from gardens to literature. About his four children and his vacations. How could such a great guy with such talent be so stupid?

I have read that dentist have the highest rate of suicide. Maybe that has something to do with it.

I will surely miss him

What a shock, Matthew!

Drug addiction is an occupational hazard for the health professions, unfortunately. I am always amazed when I get my newsletter from our state medical board to see how many health professionals have been sanctioned, lost licenses, etc., because of drugs. The overwhelming reason, in fact, is always drugs.

And, of course, addiction is an equal opportunity disease - it can happen to anyone.

How are you doing, dear friend? Enjoying life I hope.

Love,

Polly

Matthew,
I believe I can understand how you feel. I know how I'd feel if it we my dentist here in Florida. I have a lot of respect for him and I'd really be thrown for a loop if something like that happened.

I hope you will be able to find another that you like just as well.

Matthew,

I'll bet you were probably gobsmacked.

I'm pretty sure that Polly has hit the nail on the head. Drug addiction is not just a skid row problem. It's really a sad situation.

How sad, Matthew. It's really unfortunate when people become addicted to painkillers because people start using them for a good reason, but find themselves unable to live without them. I don't know if that's the case with your dentist, but it does seem to be getting more common.

Someone I know started taking painkillers for a back problem. He ended up becoming addicted to heroin, was thrown in jail (more than once), and his wife was ready to divorce him. That's when he hit rock bottom and overcame his addictions. He's back with his wife and children and is employed, but it was pretty touch and go for a while.

Hi Matthew, I live in Colorado Springs but am at the moment in Winter Park so I'm sure it will be in my paper when I get home. I live next door to my dentist. He's into flying model airplanes. His only annoying habit is his dogs and he thinks my dogs are annoying as well, but we get along great.....life can be crazy, your poor dentist's family must be in shock!
