Great video Joan.
I so think we are being sucked into our computers, into an alternate reality. I have been on the internet going on 5 years. I could write a book. I am on 8 internet forums and help run a movie forum, with over 35,000 members.
And Wowser, younger people live a lot of their lives on the internet. I am trying to wean myself off of it a bit. Get back to life on this side of the screen. Seriously I was getting sucked right into my computer!!!
I think we are at the threshhold of a Star Trek like world. The internet is just the first step.
I haven't a clue about this twitter business, and don't care to know about it. I closed my myspace account and rarely go to Facebook. I don't know about some of you other folks around my age, but most of my peers at work think I am crazy...having friends on the internet and all.

I relate this to ham radio operators, they got to get to know people all over the globe through common interests. Just like us! Or space age pen-pals.
I have nothing against younger people, but one thing I love about this forum is so many folks are my age or there abouts.

There's so much I could say about this because I used to be the technology director at a high school. At that time, we blocked AOL Instant Messenger and My Space. I wonder what they're doing now.
I teach a Sunday School class of 14-15 year-olds at my church. I send an email each week to them telling them what lesson to read. I asked how many of them get my emails, and all of them said they rarely use email anymore. They are texting, tweeting or on Facebook, I guess.
Many of our contemporaries have opened Facebook accounts because they want to know what their kids (adult and children) are doing and also want them to know about their lives.
The times they are a changin', that's for sure.

FWIW, I think you're right about the "Star Trek" type future. The internet is already becoming a "mature" industry, in many ways, and we'll probably see some radical new innovations in the near future, that will change the way we think about a lot of things.
In the mean time, a lot of people are looking for a fast and easy, (and cheap), way to add glamor and excitement to their lives, and the internet is the ideal medium for that. Apparently, a lot of people are lonely, and unsure how to, (or they're afraid to), find and cultivate new friendships, in their real lives, and social networking on the internet makes it as easy as falling off a log. Or maybe some people just crave more friends than they can lay claim to, in their real life, but for some reason or other, the "synthetic" world of the internet, is very appealing to the masses, especially the younger masses. The social networking sites have turned the art of "collecting friends" into a competitive event, and that seems to appeal to a lot of people, also.
The video to which Joan posted a link, mentioned that conventional adds are no longer very effective, (meaning no longer very profitable), but people tend to trust their peers, (even though those cyber friends are really mostly strangers), and that observation has definitely not been lost on the people currently paying for ads that no longer work. I think that the biggest thing on the near horizon right now, is all the hordes of advertising agencies, and their clients, who are practically foaming at the mouth, at the prospect of somehow getting their ads into the free flow of information at all those networking sites, so that they can cash in on all the "free" advertising. They're holding one meeting after another, trying to figure out the best way to cash in on this new game. Even the government is involved, and I'm sure that they will soon figure out how to "crash the party", and "make off with the plunder", so to speak.
Also, this disease tends to age people rapidly, so we're probably all much younger than you think.

Actually, we have a pretty good distribution, according to age, on this site, but the younger members don't seem to post as frequently as those with a few more moons behind them, probably because they're so busy twittering away, and keeping their Myspace and Facebook accounts updated.Deb wrote:I have nothing against younger people, but one thing I love about this forum is so many folks are my age or there abouts.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Fascinating, Joan, to see all of the statistics! I knew that a seismic shift had occurred, but I didn't realize all of the ways it impacts us.
One of the big positives is the global nature of networking - I love the way the world is getting smaller and smaller all of the time. Also, it is so much easier to find people or groups now who share your views as well as to learn new views.
And what would we do without Wlkipedia? I have long been impressed with the depth and accuracy of its articles, for the most part.
I used to wonder why in the world we all needed a camera in our cell phone. But now I've decided that it might keep people more honest in some ways, since any "bad behavior" can be recorded at any time, anywhere. And then shown on You Tube for millions to see!
