Computer woes

Post by JLH »

My computer doesn't want to boot. DH spent a long time last night with the Dell tech for our XPS and she took over the computer remotely. Not sure what she updated but the ^%#$#*&*#$ thing isn't working properly.

 SpellCheck had no problem with all the symbols but did with the word SpellCheck!

Oh that's a bummer Joan. You could do a system restore, but if she did do something that was needed it will wipe that out too.

You know, I realize that Microsoft's "system restore" feature must be useful, or they wouldn't put it in there, but in all honesty, I have tried it numerous times, and I have never been able to correct any problem with it. It might be able to correct certain application problems, (I've never tried it for that), but when the operating system itself becomes corrupt, I've always found the "system restore" option to be worthless, and I've always ended up restoring an image from a third-party application, in order to resolve the problem, (either Drive Image, or Acronis). Every time I've tried the "system restore" function, it has either done nothing, or further corrupted the operating system. :sigh:

Like Charley Brown, though, I almost always try it, when something goes wrong, thinking that someday, it will actually work right, and resolve the problem.

I agree with you about system restore, Tex. I may have seen it work once but it's not really clear in my memory.

I just use it when something gets out of whack, like a setting I don't want, or my husband screws something up, or if I have something downloaded I don't want, it works good to get rid of stuff like that.

For now the system restore is working unlike the fixes of two Dell techs..........You should have heard DH when he said, "Don't sell me anything (an extended warranty) fix the computer!"

Third tech is the charm

Post by JLH »

It was not the computer but the monitor!

DH ordered a new one from the Dell guy but canceled it when the tech told us how to get the even older one to work. Now we have no idea why we got the newer (broken) one.

FWIW, I had two monitors fail last year, (on two different networks), but they were the old CRT type, which I have now replaced with new, (larger) flat-panel monitors. One just went dead, and the other had color issues, and loss of brightness.

Don't you love the flat screen, lightweight ones? I sure do. The old computer in Pa is the old CRT kind and it's really hard to see. Can't wait until I can "scrap" it.

Definitely. Those older ones weight a ton, and cover a lot of real estate on your desk.
