Am ready to KILL-about Kait

Post by barbaranoela »

I just found out that the Head Shrink she has been seeing began telling Kait that she will NEVER be able to function--in this world!!!! Cus she is NOT capable of doing for yourself!!! Not understanding things and all this BULL!!!! From the beginning I understood this shrink to be helpful!!!

So what kinda FREAK bitch is this person--how could anyone do this to a human being--
With all that Kait has been thru---she is amazing---and she pushes herself to be *independent*- and wants to learn--tries to learn--Well someone telling U -*U will never learn* would surely throw one into that big black hole of *I am a nothing useless person*

Lynn got on the phone--making calls and found a place in Buffalo which Kait can attend and there she will be taught to be able to DO for herself --live by herself and survive with DIGNITY!!

Along with the X-person called a DAD---Dr. Harter--and now this idiot--who is to help a person--not take away their esteem---I am more than furious!!
And my friends say* gee wizz Barbara maybe Kait should hear the truth--not look for independence---well needless to say what I think of *such people called friends*
They have NO idea what my daughter Lynn goes thru boosting Kaits morale--no IDEA at all!!!

How does one try to reduce depression when your own friends dont GET IT!!!
If U know please do let me see what I am missing!!!

Barbara----so my dear *musketeer* I know where U are coming from~~~

Barbara, it would be justifiable. What a thing for a so-called professional to say. UGH.

I agree that his "skills" leave a lot to be desired. It's one thing to suggest the possibility that something like that might happen, but it's something else entirely, to come right out and tell a patient that she will never be fully functional. For one thing, regardless of how brilliant he might think he is, there is no way that he could actually know that to be true - that's just an opinion. Everyone has an opinion, but he apparently forgot to engage his brain, before expressing his. :sigh:

To show you how little I know about psychiatry, I actually thought that psychiatrists were suppose to help their patients. Silly me.

Morning Barbara,

I 100% agree with what Tex said. To me this is the height of unprofessionalism and I would be giving him a real piece of my mind. You all have been through way too much.

Love you, Maggie

Dear Sisbarb,

What misguided and sad behavior from a "professional". It is counterproductive and not helpful at all. The counsellor should be emphasizing all of the positives - those things that Kait WILL be able to accomplish. (I'm sure she is well aware of those things that are difficult for her). And haven't we been taught that people live up to the expectations of others?

The positive approach is always the best one. Plus no one can accomplish anything without self-confidence, which this doc seems intent on destroying. I work with a lot of kids with ADHD and their families. When I first see them, everyone (teachers, scout leaders, etc.) has been negative about them. They have often experienced nothing but failure. On the first visit I give them 2 handouts - a list titled "25 GOOD things about Me and my ADHD" and "Famous People who had ADHD".
For most families, it the first time they have been "given permission" to put a positive spin on their child's behaviors.

Lots of love,

Sispolly

I totally agree about emphasizing the positive, and kids living up to expectations. My nephew had ADHD and dislexia as a kid. He was a real handful, and always getting into trouble. But his mom NEVER gave up on him. He went to a special school for about 3 years and then was able to be mainstreamed. He grew up to be a handsome young man, and recently graduated from law school. When he was young, no one (except his mom, probably) would have ever expected him to do this.
