Probiotics - Independent testing on claims

Post by mbeezie »

Hi Everyone,

I follow a dietitian forum and the following was posted today.

ConsumerLab.com, an independent testing lab, just released their testing results for probiotics. Several brands did not have the amount of probiotic they claimed to have. For example, Align (prescribed by many GI docs) only had 53% of claimed probiotic organisms, Culturelle only had 58%, DDS Acidophilus powder had 36%, Metagenics Ultra Flora Plus DF only had 10%, Nature's Secret Ultimate Probiotic had 13%, Swiss Natural Sources "5" strain - 13%.

Brands that passed were many, but here are a few.......
Florastor (Saccharomyces Boulardii), Solgar, GNC Natural Brand Best Super Acidophilus Probiotic Complex, Advocare Probiotic Restore, Jarrow Formulas Probiotic System, Jarro-Dophilus EPS and also Jarrow Femdophilus, Nature Made, Nature's Secret, New Chapter Organics Probiotic All-Flora, Puritan's Pride.....

I didn't read the results personally (no time - I'm at work) but thought some of you may be interested.

That's interesting information.

Thanks,

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Thank you for posting the information, Mary Beth.

I've been having an awful time for the past few days, going to the bathroom 8-9 times per day with D, culiminating with a headache and D trips 10 minutes apart this morning. I decided to take the probiotic that I stopped taking a few weeks ago because it has maltodextrin in it. I had my last BM at noon and my headache is gone. I think I must have been dealing with an intestinal virus, though I didn't have a temperature. But who knows if the probiotic helped, too?

It is helpful to know which ones are most potent. We non-dairy people may have to settle for the 58% rate for Culturelle. I had been taking The Vitamin Shoppe brand, which I don't expect is very potent.

Hey all-

Saw this new kefir product inner-eco , made right here in Colorado, while shopping this weekend. Interesting in that it claims to be dairy free, gluten free, soy free and vegan in that its base is coconut water. I would question where the bacilli come from in that if they are grown on milk it may have a very small amount of dairy in it. Just don’t know but will keep an open mind. In other words in that I feel so well i am a bit of a chicken and don’t want to upset the apple cart. HaHa!

Did not buy any. Have spent so much money and heard so many claims on things that don’t work that I just stay with the status quo which is pretty darn good at this point. Would be interested in hearing from any one who tries it .

To your continued recovery

Love

Matthew
