Think Twice: How the Gut's "Second Brain"

You need to save this article now, as it is current, and if you don't subscribe to SA it is hard to find the full text later on. I think this article is groundbreaking and gives me so much hope that science is working to unlock the answers to all of this.

I began researching past posts on this forum today and found the following where Tex had linked to this past article from Scientific American, "Surprises from Celiac Disease by Alessio Fasano", and which I finally found in full on this link:
http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cac ... hGEMawlffQ

This led me to the first link on the "Second Brain" article.
And in one of your posts from this thread:
http://www.perskyfarms.com/phpBB2/viewt ... ght=#64360

which I found while researching any discussion of Schizophrenia on this Forum, I found this:
http://www.celiac.com/articles/1085/1/G ... Page1.html

Which led me to this page: Schizophrenia/Mental Problems & Celiac Disease:
http://www.celiac.com/categories/Celiac ... c-Disease/

Which I am going to send to my sister, whose daughter has been an untreated schizophrenic for over 30 years.

This recent article relates and makes SO much sense, especially in relation to the Fasano article and I LOVE the illustrations on the article by Fasano, as it shows via illustration, how the "grout" in the intestine are damaged and allow the bacteria to hide.

As a caterer I've had endless food issues to deal with for the last 22 years, have always respected and gone out of my way to honor them, but it's only been the past 5 years or so that I began to see GF as something requested. Vegan and Veggie are easy, gluten was a challenge, but I began to learn about it, not knowing that it would be an issue I'd eventually have. On my last 2 jobs, 25% of the people I was feeding had gluten issues, which echoes what I have seen statistically, that 1 in 100 are CD, 1 in 4 are GS - which means that we have a MAJOR problem worldwide with grains, particularly since GM grains.

I can be rather reactionary about health issues, and admittedly tend to attribute everybody's problems according to my particular research at the time, including my 2nd husband's family - which is a regular stewpot. He's Eastern European (both sides), grew up in Tacoma, which was a notoriously environmentally toxic area in his early childhood. His parents have passed on their undeniable genetic problems, as well as the toxin problems (which are not shared by other relatives) and present as ADHD, and other problems w/in the Autism spectrum.

His Paternal GM had Alzheimers, his Mom will soon have a thyroidectomy because she has a small, non-cancerous (but suspicious) tumor in her thyroid, (Don't even get me started on the lunacy of this!), but she has also had breast cancer and "suspicious" seems to be too much for her. Both parents have hypertension, cholesterol problems, COPD, and have had numerous stents and cardiovascular interventions and both have ADHD, Dad has Type 2 diabetes. His brother has had IBD since he was a teenager and his son has some form of Autism. DH and his sister both have ADHD and her youngest son may also have something w/in the Autism Spectrum. DH also has hypertension and high cholesterol (despite a pristine diet), has had allergy shots for over 12 years and recently is developing Asthma symptoms despite the fact that we no longer have pets and his recent allergy tests only show a reaction to dust mites. He and both his parents all have sleep apnea and sleep with a CPap. His sister has 2 sons whose father was put on drugs for cholesterol @ 37. He is my 2nd husband and not the father of my kids. Am I wrong to suggest my DH be genetically tested?

Well, in view of all the family history of medical issues, it certainly doesn't seem to be out of line to at least suggest genetic testing. It couldn't hurt anything.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
