According to conventional medical wisdom, a calorie is a calorie, regardless of it's pedigree, (it's source). IOW, it is claimed that a calorie derived from fat, is absolutely equivalent to a calorie from a carbohydrate source. Not so, according to recent research. This is another medical "assumption" that should have been refuted long ago, but was perpetuated, instead.
According to carefully controlled trials, rats fed high carb/low fat diets, (and specifically diets high in High Fructose Corn Syrup), (HFCS), gained significantly more weight than rats fed high fat/low carb diets, even though the calorie intake was the same. To make matters worse, the rats eating diets high in HFCS, (compared with diets high in sucrose, or diets high in fat), gained a disproportionate amount of their weight around their midsection, (waist - if a rat has a waist. LOL). It is becoming more and more evident why the huge increase in HFCS use, that began in the 1970s, and really boomed in the 1980s, was the beginning of the epidemic of waistline expansion that has taken over this country.
