Boy oh Boy what a Day. I've been at work 14hrs and still going. Thats the marine Corps for you. These are the days i wish we got paid overtime! lol So my doc called me today still no results on my CT Scan..grrr But he wants to up my dosage of nexium to 2 pills a day and gave me more vicadin. I am so tired right now. i've been so busy all day. i'm physically tired. I do have a question tho...has anyone ever had the permanate IV? the one that can stay in for 6 months so you can do your own IV bags? I'm just tired of going to the er every couple of days and being a human pin-cushion. No offense to Navy docs but a lot of these guys who do my IVs suck. they have no idea what they are doing. My arms are black and blue and one dude collapsed my vein. Also i was wondering if anyone has ever done a steriod through injection?
For some reason we can't seem to get this bird up! Oh for those of you who don't know i work on an air station as a supply girl. We only have helos. I really wanna go home. its friday!! I'm just starting to not feel so hot. I send all my Marines home early and so i'm by myself.
Lately i've lost my will to eat. I know i need to but i get sick when i do. I get such bad pain in my tummy. Most of the time i start throwing up too. So i've barely eating in the past week. even drinking anything hurts. i think i might have a blockage or something. the woste part is they don't think i'll my Ct results til next thursday. But i'm still staying positive.
Gabes- I hope you are enjoying your 3 day Va-Ca! I'm glad my ruffles comment made you laugh. Did i mention they are comfy too? lol
hey olivia
a very important aspect of the digestion process is looking forward to the meal. this increases saliva and stomach juices and various other actions that are important to digestion
you have to do what you can to eliminate the nausea, get your strength and look forward to eating
as i type this i am eating dees recipe of terrayki sauce on fresh salmon with rice and sweet potato, my ingredient list may be bland but you can still make it yummy and something to look forward to
Sorry you had a crappy (pun intended) day at work....
what helo's do you have there? i work for a company here in oz that build the multi role helicopter (black hawk replacement) and the aussie tiger (close to your apache)
I work on contract docs, capability reviews on role equipment etc

I haven't done the IV, but I have had to experiment quite a bit with different forms of nutrition. I can't rely on capsules or tablets dissolving, so I often have to result to liquids and powders that dissolve easily. Unfortunately, nearly all of the widely available nutritional liquids are dairy based. I tried Vivonex for a while, but it just never agreed with my stomach and was incredibly expensive. I'm still testing out different vitamin and mineral supplements and haven't found one I really like yet. However, I have found an amino acid blend that has helped tremendously. I don't digest anything well and with the free form amino acid powder, I don't have to worry so much about getting and digesting enough protein. It's not very tasty (bitter), but at the end of an active day my muscles aren't weak and shaky anymore. I should note that getting purely free form amino acids is important. If it doesn't say free form, you still have to digest it a bit before the body can use it and most of the non free form amino acid formulas out there are dairy or soy based which can cause reactions. Anyway, Jomar Labs is the manufacturer and the powder I use is their Pure Form 21 Blend (listed under Formulas):
It's about $140 per kilo which lasts me 2-3 months depending on how active I am. I usually take 1/2 to 1 tsp three times per day. They say to mix it with a little bit of water or juice, but I don't like the taste so I just take it straight and follow up with the drink and a little something sweet - like a mint.
Note - According to the Jomar Labs page (I haven't researched this elsewhere and I'm always skeptical of information on a site that's selling me something, but I found this to be true for me), if you don't have enough amino acids available, you may not be able to adequately produce digestive enzymes which just makes GI issues worse.
I am so sorry you are being a pin-cushion and to have a collapsed vein is not nice at all.
I do not know much about permanent IVs - i think they are put in the upper chest area. Hopefully someone else will post.
I have been getting vitamins and mineral IVs for the last 2 months (once every two weeks, so not too bad. Although the first nurse missed the vein a couple of times - she had a shaky hand and kept dropping things - not very reassuring. I am happy the new nurse is steady handed and seems to know better what to do!)
I am wondering how long you are scheduled to have the IVs. I do not know if others on the board have had to have as much IV medication as you are having to undergo......
All the best, Olivia, I pray for your quick recovery, Ant
There may be some other ways of doing long term IV's in your part of the world - but I know what they use around here.
My brother has had a Perma-Cath installed on a few occasions. It went in the carotid artery in the top of the chest. These have a whole bunch of risk factors, that you probably don't want to know about (risk of infection, risk of the installation going wrong, and then they aren't as permanent as they advertise, risk of upsetting things when you access it, risk when they take it back out). If your meds can muck up a regular IV, I would seriously think twice, no, three times about letting them do something this heavy duty. The doc will normally tell you if he thinks it is needed.
Are you able to get some some sub-lingual (under the tongue) vitamins? Vitamin B12 often comes this way, but some others do as well. Because these dissolve in your mouth the vitamins go straight into your blood stream from there and don't need to go into the digestive track. Whatever you can get in this way might help you get some nutrition in.
I found having a B12 lozenge in the middle of the day gave a little more energy for later in the day.
