Paging Mary Beth
Hi Mary Beth!
Interesting about the orthorexia - I'd never heard of it. Also, I saw you mention a GF/DF/SF recipe blog you have, but now I can't find the reference. Please repeat. Thanks.
Love,
Polly

Hey Polly,
Orthorexia is an interesting twist on eating disorders. I am paying attention to clients I see with food sensitivities because that can definitley play into one's fears about eating. I know of one person who has it and is now underweight.
I have started a blog for my clients - they always ask for recipes so I have started posting them, plus some other helpful information. My clients have a wide range of food sensitivities but all of my recipes are GF/DF/SF becaue that's how I cook for my family. My emphasis is on seasonal produce and I also give some tips on buying local items when possible. I encourage my clients to cook and to not feel deprived. BTW, I know some of the Potty People can't yet tolerate all of the veggies I use, but have hope - my tolerance to most fruits and veggies has increased dramatically in the last year.
Here is the link to my blog http://foodsensitivityrd.com/blog1/2010/07/ We are having oak-planked pork tenderloin with peach salsa tonight - will post that recipe tomorrow (if it's edibe).

Hi Mary Beth,
Very informative blog! Thanks. Blue cheese in guacamole at the GF restaurant? HORRORS. I guess I am a guac purist too!
Do you use the wheat free tamari (made from soy) for yourself or do you substitute something without soy? Also, does the soy in Worcestershire sauce bother you? Re the balsamic - what brand do you use? I've been afraid to try it. The watermelon vodka drink sounds interesting.
Have a great weekend!

Polly,
I use San-J Wheat free tamari and have never had a problem. I guess you can do an experiment to check your response.
I have always used balsamic and have never had a problem. I am currently using an organic local store brand (Central Market) and the only ingredients are organic wine vinegar, organic concentrated grape must and organic cooked grape must.
As for the worcestershire, soy is not listed as an allergen, only anchovies, and I know it is gluten free. The ingredients are: Vinegar, Molasses, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Anchovies, Water, Onions, Salt, Garlic, Tamarind Concentrate, Cloves, Natural Flavorings, Chili Pepper Extract. Am I missing something? I read on the internet that it used to say soy protein isolate on the label so I am assuming they took it out. Since soy is a major allergen it would need to be listed if it were an ingredient. If anyone has different information please let me know. In any case, you could leave it out of the sloppy joes without significantly changing the finished product.
The watermelon granita was yummy and very easy to make. I've never had a problem with vodka either.
I just posted the pork and peach salsa recipe - it was a hit with my family. I'll be posting lots of recipes so check in from time to time to see what we are eating.

Mary Beth,
I checked my Worcestershire and it does say soy. I have tossed it out and will get a new bottle. Thanks for the tip. Does the H.F.C.S. bother your corn-intolerant son? I am avoiding corn, too.
I have never had a problem with vodka, but I did buy a bottle of vodka made only with potatoes. Haven't tried it yet because my drink of choice is red wine.
So, you can tolerate the soy sauce made from soy beans? Is it some other form of soy that you react to (like soy lecithin?). I hadn't thought that I might be able to tolerate some forms of soy. Perhaps I should try that tamari.

Polly,
I am reactive to soy lecithin (MRT confirmed it). My soy reaction with Enterolab was 9 but I think they only test the protein. I have never reacted to the wheat free tamari. BTW, in case you are wondering, I avoid dairy by choice - I don't react to it but my son does so we keep it out of the house. I avoided dairy for a full year and then did a trial. My enterolab test was 10 for casein.
My son does not react to HFCS but we try to avoid it as much as possible - really an impossible task with children. He also doesn't seem to react to small amounts of cornstarch either. He reacts very badly to popcorn, tortillas, tamales etc and gets explosive diarrhea that leads to accidents. As a pediatrician you might find this interesting Polly. My son, Cole, had this problem for a few years, even before going gluten free. I took him to his doctor and she diagnosed him with encopresis. We know now it was the corn and not encopresis.
Our diet is primarily GF/DF/SF plus I avoid peanuts/legumes and seafood. I don't react to corn but for obvious reasons we don't have it at home.
Ahhh wine. That was my vice but now I am highly sulfite sensitive so have switched to vodka. You really don't need to worry that it is potato based - vodka ia ahighly distilled product so you shouldn't have a problem.
