Could Regular Use Of Alcohol Help To Suppress MC Symptoms?

Post by tex »

Hi All,

This article discusses research showing that alcohol consumption can actually suppress the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, but there is evidence that suggests that it can not only suppress the symptoms of autoimmune diseases in general, but help to prevent other autoimmune diseases from developing.

As I'm sure you recall, the big-name medical instutitions, (such as the Mayo Clinic), have routinely advised us to avoid alcohol, if we have MC.

Of course, as is always the case, when "medically-unpopular" substances, such as alcohol, caffeine, or nicotine, (depending on whatever the current medical fad dictates), are shown to provide significant health benefits, half the article is wasted on disclaimers and recommendations to not use the substance, despite the evidence shown by the research. Gimme a break. Do they actually believe that only idiots read the drivel they publish?

The research seems to indicate that regular, (daily), use provides the most benefits, but, of course, no minimum dose is known. The maximum dose is obviously dependent on other health considerations.

Interesting, for sure. As time goes on, more and more benefits are being found for all the vices that people have cherished for centuries, (precisely the same substances for which the medical community, and do-gooders in general, have spent countless time and money, trying to discourage us from using).

I opened this thinking, "Please, yes!!"

I've always thought alcohol aggravated my MC, but in retrospect, it was beer (gluten), red wine (yeast), and margaritas (acid) that bothered me. I never had trouble with vodka and other distilled spirits. In fact, it took much more distilled alcohol to cause a buzz than beer or wine. I could never have more than 2 beers, and red wine gave me an instant headache and made me pass out (sleeping) almost immedately.

Wahoo! I'm having cocktails tonight!

I knew the white wine was helping somewhat...

Although the beer is definitely (unfortunately) out.

Tex I was looking into the link of alcohol and RA and potentially MC. While poking around I found an interesting study that relates RA to MC (CC).

http://arthritis-research.com/content/5/S3/114

Objectives

To confirm the occurrence of RA in a large series of CC, and to search for distinguishing clinical features and possible clues to the connection.

It is a relatively small study, but I have noted that other studies have mentioned a potential link between CC and other autoimmune diseases.

Joe,

That research project was apparently an attempt to reinvent the wheel. The association between MC and RA had been common knowledge for many years before that article was published. RA was the first autoimmune disease to be associated with MC. By 1993, CC had already been associated with at least 4 or 5 other autoimmune disseases:
An increased incidence of autoimmune disorders has been observed in association with collagenous colitis. These disorders include myasthenia gravis, thyroid disease, rheumatoid arthritis, iritis, pernicious anemia and presence of antinuclear antibodies.[4]

Good news! Recently I switched to Vodka after reading some recent threads thinking that it would be better than the red wine I have been drinking forever.................wrong! It could have been the tonic (corn), but I tried it with water and lime and still had reactions. Stopped that and went back to red wine and my body is happy again! Again this is proof to the fact we all have to find our own path in healing.

Joe, I miss having a good cold beer :toast: now and then! Ginny

I miss wine quite a lot, but the problem is that for me, yeast is on te list of the offending substances, so I am afraid to include it into the diet...

Tex I believe you are right, it did seem like a which came first chicken or the egg scenario. I am just starting to catch up with the MC and autoimmune relationship. Since that last post I have run across a few other studies that say basically the same thing.

BTW II just sent you a PDF of the file my GI doc used as discussion notes during my last appt. While not a perfect write up, at least he was pretty close to being up to date with his suggestions

Thanks again Wayne
