Have They Absolutely & Completely Lost Their Minds??
I had to re-read this article twice to determine if this was actually a joke
A report by the American Journal of Cardiology states:
"We propose that the fast food industry is well placed to offer advice and supplements to counteract the cardiovascular harm arising from the foods they purvey," the report said. "These companies already have an infrastructure for providing a variety of condiments... A generic statin could be added to the panoply of items in the self-service tray at little additional cost."
That pretty much speaks for itself.... They have lost their minds

I've warned that someone could take over the political establishment of Washington, DC by simply drugging Starbucks coffee.
Statins at burger joints....hmmm...if you can't beat em, join em? Ha!! They have lost their minds.
IMHO, our medical establishment puts too much emphasis on cholesterol levels and prescribes dangerous statins to far too many people. Are there studies yet that statins actually prevent DEATH?? Elevated cholesterol (except in the event of inherited hyperlipidemia) should be dealt with by avoiding or altering the Standard American Diet (SAD), exercise, and all those things that are too difficult or inconvenient for the average American.
I'm very bitter about statins. I've seen many young friends and family members prescribed statins for borderline cholesterol levels with NO DISCUSSION OF DIET. Many have gone on to develop muscle pain, etc. Don't treat statins like a vitamin for the masses!! They are not safe!

LOL! LOL!
Funny article.
I'd bet anything that this started out as a "tongue in cheek" idea, and then took on a life of it's own. Then --- Bingo! it ended up in print in the Journal.
All kinds of ideas surface at these meetings. Good, bad, indifferent, and yes --- occasionally humerous (and or) outlandish.
Simvistatin served on the condiment bar? --- mixed with the relish? --- or what? What a hoot.

Yes, there are studies that show that statins can reduce the risk of death from coronary events. Strangely, though, all studies show that statins do not reduce the overall risk of death. IOW, statins increase the risk of dying from infection or cancer, enough to counteract any benefits that might apply to a reduced risk of coronary events, because cholesterol is protective against infection and cancer, especially in older individuals.
I have a question: If statins are so safe, "even at high doses," as they say, then why are statins available by prescription, only? Clearly, the personnel at fast-food outlets are not qualified to dispense prescription-only pharmaceuticals. We can't even trust them to make a "safe" hamburger, only an idiot would trust them to dispense prescription drugs.
Maybe these doctors are trying to tell us that they don't know any more about dispensing statins than the average fast-food worker. Hmmmmmmmm. Maybe they have a point there.
Gayle is probably right. The British are well known for their droll sense of humor, and British media especially, are not bashful about pulling off jokes on a grand scale. The study that all this publicity is based on, was carried out by researchers from Imperial College London and Imperial NHS Trust, London. The source of funding is unknown, although one of the authors does hold a grant from the British Heart Foundation. The study was published in the peer-reviewed American Journal of Cardiology.
One of the most famous hoaxes of all time took place in 1957. The respected BBC news show Panorama, announced that thanks to a very mild winter, and the virtual elimination of the dreaded spaghetti weevil, Swiss farmers were enjoying a bumper spaghetti crop. The show even included footage of Swiss peasants pulling strands of spaghetti down from trees.
Many viewers called the BBC, wanting to know how they could grow their own spaghetti tree, to which the BBC folks diplomatically replied, "place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best." To show you how old I am, I can still remember laughing at that one, when it was originally aired.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
