I believe Magnesium caused me to have D last weekend

Post by wonderwoman »

I was in Wisconsin from 9/1-9/8. I took my laptop along so was able to keep up with the posts while I was there. I didn’t do a lot of posting while I was there but read all the posts on a daily basis. I had a very busy schedule seeing old friends and family. However, I flew back home on Wednesday and Thursday 9/9, I drove up to Flagstaff, AZ where my daughter and family would be camping for 12 days. Out in the woods without electricity and running water, I didn’t think I would have internet access so I didn’t take my computer along. Big mistake! My daughter and son-in-law used their computer. When I got home and signed in Monday morning I had an overwhelming 348 new posts to read. The post that really upset me was written by Hoosier1, Rich. I will respond to his post as he needs a lot of encouragement.

I had no problems with D ever since going on Entocort July 30 or while visiting in Wisconsin. However, on Friday afternoon while camping outside of Flagstaff my daughter who is big on supplements told me she was going to have a magnesium drink and asked me if I would like one also. Without thinking or questioning her I said OK. Hot or cold she asked? I said what ever you are having. She made 2 hot drinks and gave me one. (A magnesium powder she mixed with water) It didn’t take long before the D started. I made many trips over to the camp restroom Friday afternoon and evening. Because of the cheap paper they supplied and no way of cleaning myself properly my bottom became terribly sore. I took my last 3 Pepto Bismol, and then switched to Imodium. I also took an extra Entocort on Sunday morning as we were going on an outing to the AZ Snow Bowl with 29 others.

By Sunday morning I had the D under control, I also found an ointment in their medicine cabinet for my butt, so I could enjoy the day. We rode a ski lift to the top of the mountain, a 30 minute ride up to the top, 13,000 feet above sea level, hiked around on the top, listened to a Forest Ranger give a talk on volcanos, rode the lift down again and then ate our picnic lunch. I learned from the Forest Ranger that there are four different types of volcanos. From the top of this mountain you can see each of the four types of volcanos. This is the only place in the world where this is possible.

When the D started on Friday I told my daughter and she felt very bad. I asked if magnesium was the same thing that is in Milk of Magnesia and she said yes. I don't know if she is right or not but I began thinking. Milk of Magnesia is for constipation. I don't need that. She said she probably should not have give me the magnesium to drink. It does help to keep her regular. Her husband is gluten intolerant also and my daughter knows all about what he can and cannot have. I am sure this is what caused the D because it started about 2 hours after drinking it. She is an excellent cook and knows what her husband can and cannot eat so I know it wasn’t from gluten.

I just checked my vitamins & calcium tablets to see how much magnesium I am getting in them and it’s about 185mg a day. From my experience with the magnesium powder in water, I would suggest checking to see how much magnesium you are getting if you continue with D.

My D was controlled from March through mid May using GF diet and the RX Balsalazide. Then in May I started having D again and by the end of July I was up to 30 times a day even with taking 8 Pepto Bismol a day at first and then 8 Imodium a day. July 30 I began taking 3 Entocort a day. August 10 I was down to 2 a day because my BM’s became too hard. August 25 I began taking two one day and one the next. Now I want to try one Entocort for two days and then two Entocort on the third day. That would be 4 Entocort every three days. I will do this for two weeks and then go to one a day. Because I met my “doughnut hole” with Medicare, I ordered a four month supply of Budesonide from Canadapharmacy.com. It was shipped Sept 2 and they said I should have it by 9/21. After I placed the order, I began to think that with the progress I have made since beginning Entocort less than two months ago, maybe I could have switched back to the Balsalazide RX I was taking prior to taking Entocort. But then if Balsalazide didn’t work for me then I wouldn’t have any Entocort on reserve to fall back on. By taking 1 a day I will have a years supply. Even if I don’t use them all, it is a good insurance policy to have them on hand.

I am eating a variety of foods that I had avoided for 8 months without any noticeable reaction. I do notice if I have a lot of fruit my BM's are looser. I do have grated cheese occasionally but that is the only dairy I eat. I have one pretty much normal BM every day about an hour after I get up. It's rare that I have more than one a day.

There certainly are a lot of new people here. I can hardly keep everyone straight. I have not welcomed all of them individually so let me do it now.

:welcome:

This group has saved my life. I am so thankful to have found them.

 Thanks for the welcome even if it is late (It doesn't matter that it is anyway but thank you for that.)

Apart from the D blip did you have a nice time?

Hi Charlotte,

That was not a fun experience! Actually, magnesium is an old-time rememdy for treating constipation, so you are dead-on with your thinking. I had a discussion with Dr. Fine about it some years ago. I was taking one of the OTC meds that contained magnesium (it might have been Cold Eze, but I forget now) and the D had returned. He said that magnesium does cause D and has been used for that purpose since long ago. I hope you are feeling much better.

Love,

Polly

That's why I use the spray magnesium that was recommended by a nice Potty Person. My Spectra Cell test said I was deficient.

Yes I am feeling better. I am back to 1 Entocort yesterday and today.

And Yes Naty, I did have a great time. I went to Wisconsin for my sisters 90th birthday party. I have another sister who is 95 living there and also two daughters. The older daughter has two married boys and a daughter in college. She is getting married next summer so will go back again then. I also have my youngest daughter in Wisconsin. She is a single Mom with two middle school children.

My middle daughter lives in AZ and was camping with 7 other families near Flagstaff. This is an annual event for them. All of these 7 families homeschool their children. While camping they get their school work and chores done in the morning and then the rest of the day is spent on group activities, crafts, site seeing, hiking, and of course camp fires at night.

We camped for many years while the children were growing up so I jumped at the chance to spend four days with them. The only part I didn't like is I got a late start going home and ended up driving through the mountains in the dark. My husband was glad to see me and I was happy to sleep in my own bed again.

As Polly mentioned, be aware that magnesium in your suppliments can cause D.

I have tried posting a picture in the past and was not able to do so. With the detailed instructions from Tex, I thought I would try it again. Hardest part is trying to decide which one to use as I have over 7,000 pictures on the computer. I will try a picture of the whole family that was taken last summer. The only one missing is my husband. I am in the middle with the aqua dress.

I like a challenge. Hope this works!

I hit preview and Yes it worked. Step 2 was confusing. All I had to do was click choose file. There wasn't any Browse button to the right on that window. I used the 640 X 480 size for message boards. I expected the picture to be larger.

I'm glad it worked. The labels on the buttons probably are determined by the browser you are using. I use Firefox.

The image in your post is a thumbnail. To see the full size picture, all you have to do is to click on the image in your post, and the system will display the full size image, in the size that you uploaded, (640 X 480 pixels, in this case).

Thanks for sharing,
Tex

I didn't know there was such a thing as a magnesium drink. I did find early on that any time magnesium was in vitamins or anything else.. it would sent me straight to the john... I don't have to be as careful since going into remission with entocort. However, I still wouldn't touch a magnesium drink..LOL

A "Magnesium Drink" is only what my daughter called it. She mixed a teaspoon of magnesium powder with a cup of water and heated it. The drink is not something you buy ready made.

Was there any flavor to that drink? Hate to think it wasn't at least enjoyable considering the after effects.

There was no strong or bitter taste to it. I like sweet drinks and expected it to be sweet but it wasn't.

A pity there was no flavor. Hubby says I would eat chicken poop if it was covered in chocolate.. so I might weaken if someone offered me a magnesium drink that was called "chocolate over kill":)

Charlotte, what a beautiful family you have! Honestly, you look as young as the children......or should I say grandchildren? What is your secret???

Grannyh - you are such a hoot!
