Uncle Walter and FallRiver House

Post by barbaranoela »

Most of the OLDERBEEZS know about Fall River so I shall briefly Xplain -- with the big boulder on the corner that I knew their house was just up that road--

Many moons ago Gramps and Babcia got outta Poland and located in Fall River,Mass. (where Lizzie sorta put her mom and dad to sleep forever~~~

Anyhoo---I used to spend my younger dayz in Fall River --during the summer months---and paled out with my Uncle Joe who was but 2 years older than me----
Well this house saw 13 kids born---3 that died during delivery--and my MOM being # 10 of the brood--
Gramps bought this 2 family house that has to be bout 100 years old NOW and thus the family grew .
I luved going there--
Babcia tried to teach me POLISH but being she didnt speak ENGLISH-- how could I understand what the word was that she tried to teach me---well that went outta the window-
My Gramps had a veggie garden---grape vine in the back and on Saturday nights was bath night--being not able to afford a TUB we boiled megga pots of water--and bathed in the humongus pot U ever did see--
and YES an OUTHOUSE!!!! UGH!!!!

Well my Uncle Muscles/Walter has been in a home now and the forseeable doesnt look good--
Spoke with him--and I found out the cousins Ted and Jan are in the process of starting to clear out the house and YES--it shall be demolished~~

Uncle Muscles always kept all the doorrooms BOLTED so when we were there last year I asked to see all the rooms again and it was NO WAY!!
I found out that a few of the rooms that Teddy and Jan broke into is loaded with old clothes (if all his I doubt it) and that after any holiday Uncle would go and pick up anything that people threw out!!!!
I told them better shake all the stacks of books cus ya never know if them $$$$$$bills might fall out~~~
So all that is left is my aunt Joan-(81) and she has her issues~~all kids left school at age 16-got a job to help the family--thats how my mom got to NYC and met my dad--
Some of U might remember the pic that was me with Uncle Joe--Yesssssss and who taught me how to smoke -rolling up corn husks rolled around something I forgot-- I got so sick
Well I could go on and tell U tales when this entire family got together---
The men all sat around the table and DRANK whatever Grampa dragged out--and they didnt leave until he said so- :drinking: :drinking:
Keep a good thought for Uncle Muscles and comes that day lets hope that he doesnt show up at them Pearly Gates with bottles of booze
We sure have gone thru parts of our lives together--good times--bad times--and it makes me feel *happy* to share my family with U-

I will miss the house on AETNA ST.----

Barbara,

As usual, you've painted a very vivid picture of your childhood, memories and love for your family. I enjoy reading your posts because you write so well and I feel like I've been there.

I remember when you visited your Uncle Joe. I hope he is able to cope with being uprooted from his home. It's never easy, but must be done sometimes. I suppose some of us may have to face it someday. I hope not, but if so, I hope I will understand.

Gloria,

You are so right. Barbara has the ability to pack an incredible amount of information and insight into her stories. And most importantly, she has the ability to convey a powerful sense of empathy to the reader. For example, in the quote above, her reference to Lizbeth Andrew Borden uses only a few carefully-selected words, and yet it speaks volumes about the history of Fall River, MA, and conjures up all sorts of emotions.

I never cease to be amazed at how easy her stories are to read, and yet they contain almost as much information and insight, as an hour-long tv documentary.

Barbara, you are truly gifted. Thank you so much for sharing.

Well I am also a big fan of Barbara and agree with everything that has been said. I look forward to her threads because she lightens the day and always make me smile if not laugh. Blessed are those who are gifted with word! Ginny

I like your writing, too. It reminds me of the way my very dear friend told me her stories in email. She passed away in 2003. Her name was Barbara....
