Is leaky gut the same as MC?
I was browsing the board this morning and I noticed a mention of "leaky gut." When I googled leaky gut, it sounded about the same as MC. Is it something totally different or are they one in the same?
IMO, leaky gut precedes the development of MC. Then they both happen simultanously. I believe you need to cure the leaky gut in order to cure the MC. I also believe your food intolerances can continue to multiply so long as you have leaky gut, because food proteins are reaching your bloodstream and being presented to your immune system.

It could be yeast, good vs. bad bacteria imbalance, autoimmune disease (celiac), viral or bacterial GI infections, NSAID or antibiotic use, etc. that can first cause the leaky gut. Often it's a combination of several of these. Your gut is inflamed for one reason or another and in order for your body to absorb the nutrients it needs, it expands the openings in your gut to allow more nutrients into the bloodstream. Every person may have a slightly different cause of their leaky gut, and hence a different way to heal it, but avoiding food intolerances, addressing yeast overtgrowth and adding good bacteria (probiotics) is the general approach.

I just did a search for a yeast overgrowth diet, and if I mix that with a gluten free diet it really only leaves one option.....sit in the corner and eat worms, LOL
OYE!
On a good note, I did start taking a probiotic, it's called sustenex, it's suppose to be 10x's more effective than activia. I'm hoping it will do some good.
By the way, if anyone else is interested in trying the sustenex, you can go online at www.trysustenex.com and print off a $5 off coupon.

The Leaky Gut Syndrome, (LGS), when connected with MC, is often/usually a result of food intolerances, such as gluten, dairy, soy, etc., but it can also be caused by sugars/ refined carbs, (and in those cases, it is probably connected with candida albicans yeast), and it can be caused by alcohol use, and a few other things. For people who do not have MC, alcohol is the primary cause of LGS.
Not everyone with MC has a leaky gut, but many of us do, and it can also cause other autoimmune diseases. If you have arthritis symptoms, chronic fatigue symptoms, brain fog, etc., and feel as though you've been hit by a Mack truck when you try to get out of bed in the morning, those symptoms are caused by LGS, not by MC, (at least not directly).
Those of us who do not have LGS, do not have those symptoms. Without LGS, MC presents just as the official classic description of the disease says - IOW, the only symptom of MC, (without LGS), is chronic, watery diarrhea.
LGS slowly goes away, if you avoid whatever is causing it, (in your diet).

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
