I was just wondering if anyone out there has relatives with MC?
My cousin (1st) was diagnosed with MC.
She was shocked that she came down with the same illness as me. Unfortunately, they say this is hereditary, but we don't know anyone else in the family that has had MC. If so, it must be way down the family tree.
MC is a relatively new diagnosis. Many of us with an MC diagnosis were diagnosed with IBS before MC was discovered. It's our suspicion that most of the people with IBS actually have MC, but have not been properly diagnosed.
So to answer your question, we really would have to ask relatives if they've had IBS or MC, or perhaps a few other digestive problems.
My younger daughter had IBS until she got pregnant. Then it went away. My 6 year old grandson is having problems with his BMs - can't control them, or he gets constipated. I suspect he may have MC, but my older daughter is putting it in the hands of his pediatrician, who will do surgery if some test shows it's warranted. I have no idea what test he's talking about. I hope my daughter will share more information with me before she takes any steps.

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
My mom wouldn't discuss bathroom matters, but I suspect she may have had MC. I remember her mad dashes to the bathroom, plus she spent most of her life very close to home. She also had Hashimoto's (low thyroid).
My dad died of colon cancer, and my maternal g-mo. had Hashimoto's and rheumatoid arthritis. (Hashimoto's disease and R.A. are autoimmune diseases, of course).

Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.
Yes, I believe my mother had it, although they always called it IBS and she could get it under control by taking Metamucil which is a big no-no for us. My sister is just starting to have problems; not as severe as mine, but it sounds like MC. Ginny
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change those things I can, and WISDOM to know the difference
My sister has IBS, but not of the D variety. Interestingly, we both had the same GI infection while visiting Guatemala before the onset of our joint "IBS". My mother also has GI issues, but most have been linked to infections (H.pylori, amoebas, etc). I think the "hereditary" component of MC is possible in 3 ways:
1) You share the same HLA DQ genes that predispose your family to gluten sensitivity and autoimmune diseases
2) You share a similar mix of gut bacteria acquired from your mother at birth (in the case of siblings)
2) You share many of the same life experiences with family members that contribute to disease, including infections (shared food poisoning, viral infections, etc), proximity/exposure to environmental disease triggers (pollution/mercury/radiation, etc), and dietary patterns (types of foods consumed, likelihood of taking the same types of OTC meds, etc.)
I am the only one diagnosed with MC, but I was misdiagnosed with "its all in your head"(as a young teen), then IBS, then Lupus. I was diagnosed with celiac 7 1/2 yrs ago - one of my older sisters has it too - we were diagnosed 1 month apart. We have a few family members with typical symptoms of celiac and other autoimmune disorders, which leads me to believe they have a gluten intolerance. We have a cousin on my dad's side that has lupus, thyroid, celiac, but she won't go gluten free because "she isn't having symptoms" - well, the lupus and thyroid are her symptoms - falls on deaf ears - I try!!! I really want my children to be tested for gluten intolerance, but my sons won't be tested, they don't want to know!!! One daughter would be willing and want to go GF if needed, the other daughter "would die". Oh well, I keep telling them if they get it in control now, they won't have to deal with multi-food intolerances later. Okay< I'll stop - I sound so negative, sorry! It's just so frustrating to want to help - but you can't help those who don't want to be helped. Good luck on your healing quest - this is the best group out there!!! Theresa in ME
I'm the only one in my family to have MC... and any health problems.... i don't know if i should laugh or cry as the youngest being so riddled with health problems :/

Hi Karen I have MC (CC) and Crohns. In my family I suspect my father has MC to some degree, but you will not get him to talk about it or see a doctor... His brother has ulcerative colitis.
I believe my mother had it - she certainly had the symptoms, but she was never diagnosed.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
