Got my Enterolab results

Post by Celie »

Hi All,
Got my Enterolab results today. Looks like I am sensitive to everything...

C) Egg, Yeast, and Soy Food Sensitivity Stool Panel
Fecal Anti-ovalbumin (chicken egg) IgA 11 Units (Normal Range is less than 10 Units)

Fecal Anti-saccharomyces cerevisiae (dietary yeast) IgA 10 Units (Normal Range is less than 10 Units)

Fecal Anti-soy IgA 14 Units (Normal Range is less than 10 Units)

Gluten Sensitivity Stool Test
Fecal Anti-gliadin IgA 172 Units (Normal Range is less than 10 Units)

Cow's Milk Protein Sensitivity Stool Test
Fecal Anti-casein (cow’s milk) IgA 30 Units (Normal Range is less than 10 Units)

I was surprised to see sensitivity to eggs and soy, but I guess I am going to limit my diet even further...

Sorry to hear that you tested positive to them all, Celie.

But on the bright side, you know what you need to eliminate from your diet. Just remind me I said that when I get my results back from Enterolab, okay?

Willabec,
I got my results back in just under 3 weeks. It will be three weeks on Thursday.

Will do, Martha. When do you expect yours?

Hi Celie,

That's a heck of a note, but it certainly explains why you're reacting. I'm guessing that you probably have double DQ genes, with so many sensitivities.

Do you mind if I add your test results to our database here?

Thanks,

I'm sorry that you tested positive to all five. I was stunned when I got my results and they showed the same thing. We can help you through the process of figuring out how to do without the foods.

First step would be to go to Dee's Kitchen. Dee has a list of egg substitutes and also hints for baking GF. Soy is tricky because it's in so many processed foods.

I have found it very easy to substitute with dairy-free milk and I make my own ghee as a replacement for butter. There are many substitutes for gluten.

Morning Celie,

Hate to see results like that but you are welcomed to the MI (multiple intolerances) group with open arms. Suggest Dee's kitchen for recipes and I promise you that you can still eat and be happy doing it. Narrows the diet but it will work.

Awwww, Celie!

As Maggie said, :welcome: to the MI club! :shakehands:

I know it was a shock to see the verdict in black and white, but now you can make a plan and GET WELL!
Dee's Kitchen is a good place to start. Another option is to adopt the paleo diet. Whatever you choose, there will be lots of advice and support here for you.

Love,

Polly

Tex, Feel free to add my results to the database. Perhaps they can help someone else.

I had already adopted the SCD diet without dairy, so I won't have to remove much more. The eggs will have to go, but I will adjust. Since SCD has no grain products, a lot of the gluten free recipes don't work for me. But, I am learning.

My GI doc wants to start pulling back the Entocort, so I am beginning to do that. We are going very slowly; reducing the amount by one pill a week every two weeks. I hope to be able to go without the meds. So, I am motivated. But, I have to admit that I hate the idea of never eating german chocolate cake again...

Hi Celie thanks for posting the results. Certainly these restrictions are no fun, but our health is worth so much more.

You mentioned German Chocolate cake.. Oh I miss that so...

Take Care

Celie, it is overwhelming when you find out you have many intolerances and it just takes the commitment to rethink your meals. We are all fortunate to have each other to help one another get to remission. As everyone has suggested, Dee has lots of good recipies to use. Just know that we are here to listen and cheer you on :cheerleader: ! Keep us posted on your journey to good health. GInny

I'm a bit of a skeptic about low-positive results from Enterolab. What's so magical about the cut-off of 10? If you score a 9 you're A-OK, but if you score 10 you are intolerant?? Lab cut-offs are based on statistical averages based on expected values from a population, they are not absolutes. I tested in the low teens for soy and yeast, and have been able to add them back into my diet (in moderation) without noticing flare ups from those specific foods. I'll never drink soymilk or eat tofu again, but I still enjoy fermented soy products like GF tamari and teriyaki sauce, I eat foods cooked in soybean oil, and I have chocolate made with soy lecithin. I'm able to eat Udi's bagels without trouble too. I've learned that yeast is everywhere, not just bread. Wine, grapes, fruits, vegetables, etc. It's impossible to avoid it altogether, you can only minimize your dose.

That said, I do believe I was probably reacting to those foods when I sent my samples to Enterolab. I was still eating gluten and dairy, so my system was very reactive to everything. I probably would have tested positive for meat and rice! Once I got the big 2 out of my diet, I believe things calmed down and I stopped reacting to the soy and yeast. Hopefully you can taper off the Endocort, quell the flare with diet, and eventually reintroduce some of your low-positive foods to see what happens. Just my humble opinion.

It would be interesting to re-test MC'ers at Enterolab who have gotten their disease into remission. In the case of foods they are still eating (eggs/yeast/soy, etc), would their antibody scores go down dramatically?

Celie,

sorry to hear about your results - you can look for great vegan recipes on www.glutenfreegoddess.blogspot.com or www.elanaspantry.com or http://www.thespunkycoconut.com/search/label/Grain-free If you are SCD - there are some that are grain free too - I don't know if you can tolerate coconut or nuts??? I have been able to substitute for eggs in several recipes and they work fine, others, not so good - lol. The best part of egg-free is you can safely eat the cookie or cake batter!!!

as far as the yeast goes - it could mean a yeast overgrowth in your system - at least that is what my DO told me when I showed up allergic to brewers yeast.

Good luck - you will be able to find recipes - no worries!

Theresa in ME w/MI too!

Zizzle,
I wondered about that, too. 10 is an arbitrary cut off. Perhaps those are not too bad. Wish I could say the same for Gluten and Milk.

Thanks to all for your support. I do feel the weight of the knowledge today. I see my GI doc next week. I will be interested to see what she has to say.
