The Death Of Real News - And The Loss Of Integrity

Post by tex »

Hi All,

This isn't meant to be a political post, (though it may seem that way on the surface). It's about integrity, and how it is going down the drain, because of profit motives. I can still remember the days when news reporting was unbiased, and honest. As you and I both know, that is no longer the norm - many/most news agencies these days have an ulterior motive - profit, the more the better, and the higher the profit, the more the news is sensationalized, and "selectively" reported, in order to boost ratings, and ad sales.

I don't know if you are/were a fan of Ted Koppel or not, but an article that he wrote for the Washington Post, back in November, describes one of this country's biggest problems very articulately, and elucidates why our moral fiber is being increasingly flooded with negative influences that can have very serious long-term effects. The news media's all-out drive to profit from the news, is, IMO, doing grave damage to our ability to think for ourselves, and to think rationally, in this country. The article is fairly long, (2 pages), but he does a much better job than I can, in bringing the facts to light. I for one, truly miss the days of honest and unbiased news reporting - from back in the days when all the newsrooms operated at a loss. Many of today's news reporters remind me of smooth-talking, high-pressure sales reps, rather than news reporters.

Amen, Tex. I don't know what to believe anymore!! News is no longer reported. It's pre-processed and packaged before it reaches us, much like everything else!

Tex,
I suspect you and I are on opposite ends of the political spectrum but I agree with you. It is hard to find any news that does not have an agenda, left, right, or center.
I tend more towards online independent news, or reading news from foreign countries (in English).
But I agree, everyone has an agenda and care more about selling their product than informing the public.

Tex--

I told you we had more in common than we realized---

I stopped watching American news several years ago. Since then, I have gotten my news from the BBC. They really do have thousands of correspondents all over the world who really tend to know what they are talking about. I just about fell over at the end of the article when I realized that Ted Koppel was indeed an analyst for BBC America.....

I completely agree. It's the dumbing down of Americans. Even the local news is not news. I, like Mags watch the BBC. It is amazing how much news is reported by them that is not covered by US news orgs.

Pretty Scary.

I'm with Rich. Seriously, I am so glad we don't talk politics on here because I know that we are all over the spectrum. I, for example, am extremely conservative (a member of the vast right-wing conspiracy, lol). I get my news from http://patriotpost.us and have for many years. But our mutual need for answers as to how we can lessen the inflammation, control our symptoms, and improve the quality of our lives is the preeminent goal, and it brings us together from all corners of the world, all walks of life, and many different religions and political persuasions. Would that such a culture of civility would return to the real world...

Given the weeks events that have occurred around me this week the focus of the reports was not necessarily to inform, IMO it was more like ego based manipulation.

the basis of the footage was linked to ratings and capturing the audience where the biggest ratings could be gained.

cant let facts get in the way of a good ratings generating story....................

Whatever ones politics MC has given us all this in common..........

we have to dig deep to try and find the truth about our health
we learn to question and not trust "so called" experts
we have to become are own researchers
we have to keep an open mind to all ideas because we do not yet know the best solutions.....

(These characteristics would also qualify us as ethical journalists)

Tex - you are 100% on but then I think you and I think a lot alike. Newspapers in my area are the worst at being biased; television news in general is totally biased; try to stay with independent sources like I am/.
