home stomach acid test

Post by willabec »

have any of you done the 1/4 tsp. baking soda and water test to see if you are producing enough acid? i don't know how i came across this test and information, but i tried it this a.m. before i ate anything (still have not eaten anything yet) or drank anything. after drinking the solution (yuck!!) i did not burp in the allotted 5 min. i did a small burp after about 15 min. how effective is this test. maybe this can attribute to the undigested food in my stool, my recent acid reflux symptoms???? i know some of you will not agree, but it makes some sense to me.

I'm not familiar with that "test", but I'm convinced that insufficient stomach acid is the cause of most acid reflux issues, (not excess acid, as most doctors incorrectly assume, so that they can write a prescription for a PPI). As we age, we lose some of our ability to produce stomach acid, that's a natural part of the aging process. Why would our ability to produce stomach acid suddenly improve, as we get older? That's totally illogical, (but, of course, most doctors don't think logically - they think, "prescribe a PPI". LOL.

DH has acid reflux because he has a "loose esophagus". So loose that it allows the natural acid to backsplash up his esophagus. He had endoscopy which confirmed it. Sooooo he takes Omeprizole (Prilosec). He doesn't want to go through surgery to fix his esophagus which wasn't even recommended by his GI. Just another reason other than too much acid for reflux.

I have been using some strips that you can test saliva and/or urine for PH.
have not heard of the baking soda technique, my PH has been mostly 6.8.

the potassium powder i am taking (to help with gerd and other things) has bicarb in it, and i always burp within the first 3 minutes of taking it, after that no issues

Well, I was curious so I looked it up.

years ago when the heartburn go so bad I couldn't stand it I'd swallow a little baking soda (with water). Always worked but they say it isn't a good thing to do.
