IgA Raises More Questions Than Gives Answers

Post by MBombardier »

Here is my test result. You may recall that all of my Enterolab results except for the fecal fat score (and the two genes, one for celiac and one GS) were within normal limits, and we thought I might be deficient in IgA. Apparently not.

Component Your Value Standard Range
Immunoglobulin A 163 66 - 436 mg/dL

I'd tear out my hair if I wasn't already losing it!!!

Hmmmmmm. Yep, this is getting to be confusing and frustrating. How could you have a fat malabsorption problem, without anti-gliadin antibodies? The only possible answers that I can visualize would be either a failure of the pancreas to produce an adequate supply of lipase, (or a blockage of the pancreatic duct), or a blockage of the common bile duct. But if either scenario were present, you should be feeling a lot of pain, so evidently that's not the case, either.

Puzzling, indeed.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I know that people can spontaneously start manufacturing IgA again, and that IgA levels go up and down. So maybe that's what happened--I tested at Enterolab when they were low, and at the doctor's when they were high. I'm choosing to be encouraged by these good results, and just to do what I know I need to be doing, which is total abstinence from gluten, soy, and corn, and evaluating rice.

I was also encouraged by the rest of my labs which were really good with the exception of a slightly high AST. But all the other liver tests were within normal range. I had an uncle who died of liver cancer, so I will probably be touching bases with the MD on it.

In the meantime, I feel quite well today, so I will enjoy it!!

Marliss,

Glad to hear you're having a good day. What a confusing lot of data you have to interpret. On reflection, that's probably why I'm so relieved - my Enterolab results were like a shot-heard-round-the-kitchen. I was surprised by a couple of things, but not baffled.

Good for you, enjoying a moment of health and not getting totally sidetracked by the seemingly contradictory results ;)
