Sorry About The Crash

Post by tex »

Hi All,

As you may know, if you tried to access the board late this morning, the database crashed due to a corrupt sessions table. I have no idea why this happened, (well, maybe I do, but it's just a sneaking suspicion that the server that this board is hosted on, might be suffering from insufficient hard disk drive capacity, but I'll check that out later).

Anyway, when I checked with the admins at my ISP, (where this board is hosted), they told me that there was nothing they could do, and the only option I had, was to restore the last database backup, which, unfortunately, is now 10 days old, (I normally backup the database each weekend, but a couple of weeks ago, I was having a connection issue, (slow connection speed), which caused me to postpone a backup, and I got off schedule - I was planning to do a backup this weekend, of course, to get back on my regular schedule.

Fortunately, I did a little research, and found a way to repair the sessions table, so we're back in business, and hopefully, we didn't lose any data in the process. I find it kind of ironic that an ignorant old country boy, such as myself, was able to do something that professional admins, (earning big bucks for their expertise), obviously didn't have a clue about. Shame on those guys. They missed their calling - they probably should have been GI docs.

I was really gnashing my teeth for a while there, about the prospect of losing 10 days worth of posts - that's a lot of data. Not only that, but it takes a while to restore all that data, and it might have taken a day or so to get the board up and running again, if I had found it necessary to restore the entire database.

Anyway, sorry about the problem.

Love,
Tex

Joe,

Thanks - I bookmarked that reference, in case I ever encounter that problem. One never knows what's going to happen next, when computers are involved. Anytime something like that happens, my first thought is usually, "I'm out of luck, 'cause this is completely out of my league".

Tex,

I second, third and fourth the comments. I did notice the board was down and I was worried it wouldn't come back. It was an interesting feeling to suddenly feel alone again, wondering how I'd find wonderful supporters like you all. I need not have worried. You're truly amazing!

Hugs,
