Question about new prescription

Post by nancyl »

I am now down to one Entocort a day and GF, DF, EF, and SF. I have been GF for a month and about 3 months from all the others. I began taking a little Questran last week and not sure if I'm getting some discomfort from that or something else. I'm playing with the dosage right now. I've had some nausea. I called my GI doc because I had concerns about staying on Omeprazole. His nurse called me back telling me that he wants me to stay on Omeprazole and also called in a prescription for Welchol 625 mg and suppose to take 4 a day. The pharmacist was surprised that he prescribed this for colitis and thought the Questran would be better to take. I didn't mention that I've gone from seeing Norman one time a day for the last few months while on Entocort to going 2-3 times a day. Not Norman, but not bad either.

Welchol is a bile acid sequestrant, that works similarly to Questran, (it's used for lowering cholesterol and blood sugar levels, but it has the side effect of causing constipation). Not everyone can take Welchol. Here's a post by another member:

Omeprazole is a well-known cause of microscopic colitis.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Tex,
That's what I thought when I read the side effects of Welchol - the constipation. So far I've been taking 1 heaping teaspoon of Questran a day and it seems to be working.

I told the nurse in his office about the Omeprazole and MC connection and she agreed, but after talking to the doctor she called back leaving a message that I must stay on it. It is a delemna.
