Visiting San Francisco, great trip!!!

Post by randyh »

Just wanted to share a recent great trip to San Francisco!!! The reason I decided to share this is that I was feeling very well during this visit and I need to focus on something positive today since I am not feeling well.

A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I went to San Francisco. I had a class to attend there and the in-laws live about 60 miles north so we decided to visit since we were going to be so close.

The reason it was so nice is the entire 5 days we were there, I felt wonderful, no issues at all, my head was clear, the coolness was excellent since we have been at or over 100 degrees in SE NM were we live. Allot of it, I think, was the reduction in stress. Even though I was there for business, it was the best vacation we could have had. We went to China Town and had dinner and shopping to celebrate our anniversary. Had dinner at a nice place, told the lady that I needed GF and she told me what was available on the menu. Had no problems with the food and the Jasmine hot tea they served was excellent.

It served to remind me that much of my problems are stress related, or at least stress aggravates them.

Anyway, it was a wonderful trip and the closest to normal that I have felt in a very long time.

Might be time to think of finding a less stressful way to live, that would involve a major life change, but might be worth it.

Hope everyone is doing well!!!

Blessings,
Randy

Randy,

Anytime you can turn a business trip into a very enjoyable vacation trip, it doesn't get much better than that. I'm glad that the two of you were able to have such a good time, and that your MC was cooperative while you were there.

Speaking of temperatures, that temperature change might have had something to do with your lack of symptoms. Are you aware that for some people with mast cell issues, symptoms can be brought on by high temperatures, or exposure to the sun. For some individuals, vigorous exercise can trigger their symptoms, but that may be connected with the temperature trigger. I get the impression that most people who have that problem, tend to have the greatest risk when they exercise outdoors, on a hot day, but for others, just enough exercise to get warmed up, even indoors, can trigger symptoms.

Flushing is a part of the typical anaphylaxis response. That makes me wonder if maybe getting hot enough, (or doing something else), to cause a flushing effect on the skin of the face or upper body, might be all that is required to serve as a trigger for existing mast cells to degranulate, resulting in typical mast cell symptoms.

Thanks for sharing that trip.

Tex,

The symptoms that I lack for the mast cell issue are just what you describe, I do not flush at all. I work in an office most of that day and usually do my chores outside during the early morning or late evening, with the proper protection of course (sun block, nice big hat) and have never noticed any flushing so I am wondering if what I am having is something else.

I did find out that I did gluten myself Sunday so I am thinking that may be what it going on this time. Prior to that I was doing very well.

The thing that gets me about this time is that its a little different that anything before but I attribute that from being GF for several months now and then introducing gluten into my diet again, I think the reaction was a little more "violent" if you will.

Feeling better this afternoon but I didn't eat anything for lunch. I feel hungry now so that encouraging, going to eat dinner, but it will limited to a steak and nothing else until I find out what is causing this.

Thanks,
Randy

Randy,

Glad to hear about your great trip. San Francisco is lovely and right now I would do anything to be out of this miserable heat wave.

I have mast cell activation and do not flush usually. I only had a flushing problem when I was running in the heat (my trigger for my latest flare). And I didn't know I was flushing because I didn't look in the mirror when I got home but one day my son commented on how red my face got when I ran and when I looked in the mirror I was shocked. This wasn't happening at the gym but apparently the combination of intense exercise and heat is a trigger for me.

Mary Beth,

Many years ago, I noticed I got bright-red when dancing hard in the heat, or taking an aerobics class... I think mast cells are the undescribed issue for many people, not just those of us with MC. (For me, this is huge, because I'm blaming a constellation of health issues on something *other* than gluten, for a change.)

Randy, sorry to hear you got glutened - and yes, I do still blame gluten  and I think that the interplay between the strong immune response to gluten, and mast-cell activation, is very powerful. Hope you're feeling better. I definitely had that experience - after I eliminated gluten, accidental exposure was disastrous, much worse than the low-level upset that had been going on previously.

Health to all,

Sara
