looking for advice
I am new to this forum. I was diagnosed with LC in 2003 after a colonoscopy. I began a series on Entocort and stayed with it for a number of years. In 2010 I had a complete remission for over a year. In July I was given 3 courses of Bactrim for a prostate infection. I was also asked to take ibuprofen for a month. The MC returned with a vengeance. I went back on Entocort and GF and DF diet. I also had a flare of GERD.
The GI asked me to take Dexilant for the GERD.
it has caused a major flare of MC, so I quit it after day two. Then he gave me Zantac 300 mg three times a day. And sucrafate four times a day with the Entocort . I am only mildly better.
the MC is gas bloating and rib pain. It begins I the afternoon and lasts most ofmthenday and into the night. Any suggestions would be welcome. JH.

Hi Joseph,
Welcome to the board. Wow! A lot of your problems are iatrogenic, due to either ignorant or careless advice by your doctors, (ibuprofen, Dexilant, Zantac, for example). Your doctors' knowledge of MC leaves a lot to be desired. NSAIDs and PPIs should never be taken by someone with MC, and H2 antihistamines, (such as Zantac), are also risky - risky enough that even the Mayo Clinic recognizes the association, (so it must be pretty risky).

There are quite a few posts on this board about controlling GERD, (because it's a common problem with MC). I'll see if I can locate one.
Here's one - post number 4, (by me), on this page:

You may be low on vitamin D. Low vitamin D is very common for anyone with an inflammatory bowel disease, and low vitamin D can cause GERD, (among many other things). This thread contains some good tips, especially post number 11, (by Gabes):

The gas and bloating is almost surely caused by food fermenting in your digestive system, (usually caused by food-sensitivities, but when we are in an MC flare, it can also be caused by the fermentation of fiber and/or sugar in the diet.
Again, welcome aboard, and please feel free to ask anything.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
