blackstrap molasses
I heard part of a People's Pharmacy radio program yesterday talking about taking blackstrap molasses to relieve or heal hemorrhoids. I also also looked it up online, and it looks like blackstrap molasses is also used to relieve constipation.
If I try this to help my hemorrhoids, am I likely to cause diarrhea? Of D and hemorrhoids, I'd rather have the hemorrhoids. (Boy, that is a hard word to spell! Why does it have a double R?)
I'd appreciate any ideas any of you might have.
Thanks,
Martha

Hi Martha,
I have heard of blackstrap molasses being touted for increased energy due to being high in iron, potassium, calcium and B6, among other things. I have tried to include it in my diet at 2 different points in time of my healing, but sadly both times the big D. showed up :(.
Since we are all so different in our responses, I would give it a try if I were you - you'll quickly figure out if it will work for you.
Love,
Kari

"My mouth waters whenever I pass a bakery shop and sniff the aroma of fresh bread, but I am also grateful simply to be alive and sniffing." Dr. Bernstein
I'm presently eliminating brown sugar to see if the molasses in it has been a problem. I would get gurgling right after eating maple pudding, which I made with brown cane sugar. I'm substituting maple sugar instead. I'd love to be able to use molasses which is pretty nutritious, but it makes me nervous.

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
Martha,
As it happens, I bought some just before Thanksgiving, but haven't yet tried it (I realized I had planned on serving about 3 dozen dishes, and that seemed like a little much!). I'll give it a tiny test drive in the next couple of weeks (either just on its own, or I'll make the dessert I planned for Thanksgiving when my Christmas guests arrive).
I will let you know, though of course what works for me may not for you (and vice versa!). I don't eat much of any sweetener, but I do use a touch of maple syrup or honey from time to time. I had forgotten about those reported health benefits of blackstrap molasses.
Love,
Sara

Martha,
I wish I had seen this BEFORE I went shopping. I will try anything to relieve C. Almost. I won't eat palm oil shortening again, because the descent into a flare is so miserable I would do anything to avoid it.
Next time I go I will get some.
Meantime, do you intend to take it in a spoon like nut butter? Or cook with it?
