wheat grass,barley grass. barley malt?
I'm sure you guys know the answer to this one. I've been drinking an "green" energy drink for years and now that I am going to go Gluten free, I was wondering if wheat GRASS, barley GRASS. and barley malt ( this one is probably a no go) is off limits?
Hi Leah,
Barley malt will cause virtually anyone sensitive to gluten, to react. Theoretically, at least, wheat grass and barley grass shouldn't contain any gluten, (gluten is found in the storage proteins of the grain produced by these grasses, (specifically, in the endosperm of the kernel).

So does that mean that eating sprouts of any type of seeds would be OK even if the seed isn't? I'm thinking about legume seeds, too. I used to love eating alfalfa sprouts, bean sprouts, etc.Tex wrote:Theoretically, at least, wheat grass and barley grass shouldn't contain any gluten, (gluten is found in the storage proteins of the grain produced by these grasses, (specifically, in the endosperm of the kernel).
One other comment: If half the population is infected with large roundworms or hookworms, then they shouldn't have any MC reactions. If they weren't infected, would our MC ranks be even larger? Another question: I thought that people used hookworms to control digestive problems, they had to ingest the eggs every month or so. An infection implies that the worm's have set up residence.

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
So long as you don't eat what's left of the seed that it sprouted from, that should work.Gloria wrote:So does that mean that eating sprouts of any type of seeds would be OK even if the seed isn't?
Probably, but some ethnic groups may not be genetically predisposed.Gloria wrote:If half the population is infected with large roundworms or hookworms, then they shouldn't have any MC reactions. If they weren't infected, would our MC ranks be even larger?
The first successful experiments were done with pig whipworms, which lasted about a month before they had to be "restocked".Gloria wrote:Another question: I thought that people used hookworms to control digestive problems, they had to ingest the eggs every month or so. Hookworms can survive up to a year, so they don't have to be restocked as often. All helminths, (including hookworms), are incapable of completing their life cycle endogenously, but reinfection is automatic, (probably on a daily basis), for anyone who walks barefoot on soil contaminated with infected feces. In parts of the world where helminths are a problem, the soil is loaded with larvae, looking for a bare foot. Have you ever seen this article?
