An Interesting Research Article On LDL Cholesterol

Hi All,

Conventional medical wisdom says that we should try to maintain our LDL cholesterol level as low as possible, (in order to minimize cardiovascular risks). In his most recent newsletter, Dr. Briffa discusses an interesting observation about the relationship of cholesterol and cancer. It seems that lower LDL cholesterol numbers are associated with higher risks of developing cancer. I've always wondered why my LDL results are always high, (except for the period of time when I took a statin for a while). According to research, (substantiated by several independent studies), long-term periods of low LDL are associated with a higher cancer risk.

What I don't understand about this study is how the authors can conclude that the use of statins to suppress LDL numbers, has no effect on cancer risk. That seems just a bit contrary to the evidence, and Dr. Briffa appears to agree with me. My question is, "for most of us, how does one's LDL get to such low levels, if not by statin therapy?"

Do statins cause people to trade cardiovascular risk for cancer risk?
