USAToday expose on neighborhoods built near old factories

Post by Zizzle »

My BIL works for USAToday in IT/networking/website. He worked on this piece released today. Truly depressing stuff about neighborhoods build on or near sites of old lead smelters and other toxic factories from years ago. You can find the sites they uncovered all over the country -- make sure you don't live near one!! Lead is mentioned as a cause of ADHD, not to mention a host of other issues. I imagine these usually become lower-income neighborhoods, hence the disproportionate share of developmental disabilities, ADHD, autism, etc. among low income minorities.

I lived 5 years in Stratford, CT, a town where Raybestos dumped its asbestos and other waste all over the place, including under school sites and the town beach. The town had to add multiple feet of topsoil to the parkland by the beach and various school fields while I lived there. The town claims disease rates are no worse then anywhere else...
