Hello! I turned 65 in May & recently had my first bone density scan. i just read the report & it says that I have osteoporosis! That is a complete shock to me. My vitamin D level is fine and I have been an avid walker for years, which I thought builds bone strength.
Any recommendations as to what I should take? I am not currently taking a calcium supplement & I avoid dairy. This has me a bit down.
Thanks!

Re: Osteoporosis
Hi Marsia,
Are you taking a magnesium supplement? The reason I ask, is because vitamin D will enhance absorption of calcium into the bloodstream, but in order for insulin to be able 10 transport it to the cells where it is needed (such as in the bones), there has to be an adequate level of magnesium available.
And remember, some people have more porous bones than others because of their genetics, not solely because of osteoporosis. Genetics play a major role in determining peak bone mass, bone structure, and how bone is remodeled over time.
Up to 60–80% of bone mineral density (BMD) is determined by genetics.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Re: Osteoporosis
Hi, Tex. Thank you for your response. I take Dr’s Best magnesium glycinate 2xday, but it’s only 100 mg. each. How much would you recommend?
I appreciate the information about genetics. I have a family reunion tomorrow & will be the perfect opportunity to talk with some of the other women.

Re: Osteoporosis
The RDA for women is 325 mg of magnesium, so with what you're getting in your diet, that should be sufficient magnesium, unless your MC is active. We need more magnesium if our MC is active, but I know you've been in remission for years. That's why I brought up the genetic issue.

Re: Osteoporosis
Thanks, Tex. I’m leaning toward the genetic aspect. My sister has osteopenia as well as RA & PMR. I’m afraid to have any other tests done! I feel good!
Hope you have a great weekend!
