Extremely Nauseous, feeling full & elevated liver enzymes

Post by Julie75 »

Greetings all!
I was diagnosed with CC about 3 years ago. I have had a ton of labs with docs and working with a functional doc. I just went off budesonide and my WD has started right back up with avengence. But I am suspecting that I have something more than just MC going on but drs are not picking up on it. I figured I would run it by you all here to see if my symptoms are typical with MC or if anyone else has similar and knows what it is causing it.

Along with MC symptoms, D, gas, abdominal discomfort, I get so sick to my stomach with extreme nausea and a burning feeling like the inside of my stomach is an open sore. I feel fullish all the time, get headaches. Dr put me on acid reducers and thinking it is too much stomach acid but those don't help. I could be completely wrong but I don't think it is too much stomach acid, maybe stomach acid is aggravating my inflamed stomach but I don't think it is the cause. My FD keeps having me try digestive enzymes but they seem to make things worse. So I don't know if my stomach issues are something separate from the MC or if this is a symptom of MC. Because they show up together and both stop with budesonide. I also have mildly elevated liver enzymes that go back to normal when on budesonide. I also have tenderness and have the fullness in the liver area. We suspected autoimmune hepatitis, dr ordered tests for that but I was already taking budesonide when they were done and everything came back not showing AH but could that be because I was on budesonide and symptoms were suppressed and labs normal? Above all I think there is something else going on with my stomach. The nausea is so bad that it makes it hard to get through the day. I own my own business so I am able to work from home most of the time and that is very fortunate because with as sick as I feel it would be hard to have a regular job that I had to show up to. Between that and the WD I have to pretty much stay home.

I know nausea is a symptom of MC but to the extreme? Debilitating? For me it is just as bad as the WD, just as debilitating, just as life altering. It is depressing and stealing my life. I have done elimination of foods I have shown reactive to. Been gf for 10+ years. I feel like whatever is going on with my stomach is either part of MC or it is actually its own thing and without getting that under control I can't get the MC under control because i can feel it is a huge indicator of inflammation. I think I have to stay on 6mg of budesonide because I feel completely normal on that, at this point I have gone from a "I never want to have to take a pill everyday" kind of a person to "just give it to me".

Boiled down: Can anyone with MC tell me if they get that much nausea with a flair? Is it "normal" with MC? OR Do my symptoms sound familiar to anyone that can maybe point me in a direction?

Hi Julie,

Welcome to the group. Your symptoms sound like mine when my MC was at its worst. My nausea was so bad that I couldn't work many mornings. Afternoons were sometimes better, but not great. The worst days were when I had migraines, because they always initiated nausea. At the time, I never figured out the reason, and just assumed they were part of the disease. Looking back now (25 years later) I suspect the nausea was caused by vitamin and mineral deficiencies as a side effect of MC. Vitamin D deficiency can increase ALP. Magnesium deficiency can indirectly result in ALP/AST elevation. The strongest, well-documented deficiency likely to cause liver enzyme elevations, is choline, due to a low choline diet.

Magnesium deficiency can cause muscle spasms resulting in gastroparesis (slow stomach emptying — a major cause of nausea). This causes not only nausea, but a feeling of fullness. As an example, magnesium deficiency is very common in diabetes, and diabetics often have gastroparesis. Low stomach acid can Indirectly contribute to liver enzyme elevations. Drs. claim they aren't influenced by pharmaceutical company propaganda, yet when dealing with patients whom they suspect have stomach acid issues, they virtually always prescribe a PPI to lower stomach acid. This wouldn't be such a glaring mistake if excess stomach acid production was a common problem, but in fact, it's extremely rare. By contrast, low stomach acid is a common problem, Especially among older patients.

Again, welcome aboard, and I hope this helps.

Thanks Tex, that helps a lot to just know that those symptoms to that degree aren’t necessarily another illness to figure out. I have started taking D vitamins and magnesium over the last couple of weeks so hopefully that can improve things. I have been GF for years but I just realized yesterday that I have been GF to the degree that I don’t eat a piece of bread or pizza but not to the level of making sure I’m not getting hidden gluten or worrying about cross contamination. I made a chicken and rice soup with chicken stock on Saturday and ate a ton because it was so good! But I was sick all night, didn’t sleep and was in the bathroom and sick to my stomach all day. I’m still recovering but a lot better today. I couldn’t figure out why I had such a flair eating all good foods. Well, the stock wasn’t labeled GF, I just didn’t pay attention and assumed it was. So now I am going to be very strict and careful and see how that works. I really appreciate your help, it’s the best source of support and advice for those of us with this awful disease.

Like celiacs, some of us can tolerate tiny amounts of gluten, and some of us can't. I'm betting that if you're really careful with your diet, you'll be able to stop the reactions.

Best of luck to you on your journey back to health.
