Well I can say this Barb.....if it were in a house I was staying, I would have to replace the toilet....because I would shoot the rat before it could get the lid up all the way 
I can handle snakes and many other critters...I can even empty mouse traps but not rats. That's why they make 9mm's. Take care and be careful Ms Columbo, carry a big stick to the toi toi (toilet) Love Oma
