What do you know about Rocaltrol? What does the hormone stuff mean?

Hi Joan,

I had never heard of it before you brought it up, so I looked it up. It appears to be just vitamin D3, and evidently it's claimed to enhance calcium absorption in the GI tract. Apparently, it's a pretty stiff dose of D3, since it's available by prescription only, and used for special purposes.

I assume that the "hormone stuff" you mentioned, refers to it's propensity to cause major fetal damage, (severe deformations), based on tests with rabbits. This is known as a teratogenetic effect, and you can read about it in this product information, from the maker, Roche Pharmaceuticals. (It can also be transferred through mother's milk, to nursing infants.)

If Dr. Mercola is right, maybe it will be prescribed for treatment of IBDs, since it did so well on rats with colitis.
